Coco Gauff vs Sofia Kenin
This could turn out to be an interesting fifth meeting between Cori Gauff and Sofia Kenin. And we say that not just because it’s 2-2 on head to head but also since the kind of form shown by the two has been not so dissimilar.
Gauff made the third round at the Indian Wells Open but suffered a defeat at the hands of Belinda Bencic, having also come into that tournament on a three-match losing streak.
Kenin, on the other hand, made the quarterfinals in Dubai, was a second round entrant in Indian Wells and sent Petra Kvitova out in the first round earlier in this tournament.
The good news for Gauff is that she did defeat Kenin in the first round of the Australian Open earlier this year but those were different times – Gauff’s form was at her peak at that point of time. Her form right now gives Kenin a chance to make it through or at least put up a strong fight here.
Gauff v Kenin Tip: Kenin to win a set – Yes: 8/11
Ons Jabeur vs Katerina Siniakova
They have also played each other four times at the highest level with Katerina Siniakova winning in their first two meetings back in 2018 while Ons Jabeur grabbing victories in 2020 in Doha and in 2021 in Dubai.
Jabeur looked to have made a solid start to the season with her fitness there to be seen to everyone. She won three matches in a row in Brisbane, and then again in Doha to reach the quarterfinals at both more in more recent times she is also on a three-match losing streak.
This includes a quarterfinal loss to Jelena Ostapenko in Doha, against Peyton Stearns in Dubai and then in her opener at the Indian Wells Open against Dayana Yastremska.
Siniakova could prove to be a tough opposition having entered the third round in Indian Wells earlier this month before defeating Yue Yuan in a hard-fought opener here in Miami. It needed her a final set tie-breaker to get through.
What we think could happen here is Jabeur might find the kind of form that’s needed to usurp someone ranked a good 27 spots behind her in this second round encounter. And that could help her run away to a bit of a deep run here.
Jabeur v Siniakova Tip: Jabeur to win: 4/6
Naomi Osaka vs Liudmila Samsonova
Naomi Osaka said at the end of her first round win over Yuliia Starodubtseva that she longs to play in the big league, i.e. wants to play against the top players of the world deep in the tournaments.
Unfortunately for her, that means she needs to win the early rounds against some of the better players too and this will be one such example of that. Liudmilla Samsonova is ranked 21st in the world at the moment, 40 spots ahead of her opponent here but as far as form goes, Osaka has a better chance.
Which is also why she starts off a 4/5 favourite here.
Samsonova had barely won anything this season before entering the quarterfinals in Indian Wells – she defeated Caty McNally, Daria Kasatkina and Jasmine Paolini in that tournament. With this new-found confidence she might hold a teeny-weeny upper hand but we think Osaka should still edge her out.
Osaka v Samsonova Tip: Osaka to win: 4/5
