Arthur Fils v Jakub Mensik Head to Head
They have never faced off at the highest level but they did take on each other at the Next Gen Finals last year and Fils had been an easy winner.
Fils Stuns Zverev
Alexander Zverev hasn’t been the same player since he lost the final of the Australian Open earlier this year. He has consistently lost early in competitions and in the four tournaments Zverev played between that defeat and before the Miami Masters, he hadn’t won three matches in a row.
So when Zverev grabbed the first set of his fourth round encounter against Arthur Fils, it looked like he had a good chance to change that record and get back to his winning ways.
Fils had other idea as he clinched another ATP 1000 quarterfinals spot with a three-set victory over Zverev. He had made the last eight round at the Indian Wells Masters earlier this month too but there he hadn’t defeated any top 10 players and had then gone down to Daniil Medvedev.
Here, Fils had already overcome Gabriel Diallo and Frances Tiafoe in his previous rounds and by overcoming Zverev, he has won against a world number two for the first time in his career.
This will be a golden chance for Fils to make it to his maiden semifinal at an ATP 1000 (or better) event.
Mensik Benefits from Machac Injury
Tomas Machac had defeated Jakub Mensik in their first meeting which had come earlier this year in Acapulco. He would have entered his fourth round match with a good chance to do that too.
Mensik, however, did not have to take to court as Machac withdrew from their encounter because of injury leaving him with his second career appearance at an ATP 1000 event following his performance at the Shanghai Masters last year.
This follows Mensik’s victories over Roberto Bautista Agut and Roman Safiullin and a shock loss of Jack Draper in two tie-breakers.
What could work in his favour is that Mensik last took to court on March 24, which means he has had a two-day break coming into this quarterfinals. As opposed to that, his opponent’s match was postponed to March 26 following rains on the previous day – giving Fils no break between the two rounds.
Fils v Mensik Predictions
While Fils is an on-paper favourite at 17/20, Mensik’s form and the fact that he has had a nice break coming into this, will play a part here. Backing a hard-fought which, if it does go into the third set, might work in the favour of Mensik.
