Taylor Fritz v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head
Four matches played, four matches won. That’s Fritz’s record against Berrettini at this level which includes victories at the 2019 Davis Cup, 2021 and 2023 Indian Wells Masters and the US Open played last year.
Fritz in Demolition Mode
The draw might have been kind to Taylor Fritz but there is no doubting the fact that he has taken full toll of that too.
In the three rounds that he has played in this tournament, Fritz has been tested at different times during his matches but the American has come through in straight sets in the end.
The latest of those victories came against Adam Walton, an Aussie lucky loser, whom he defeated 6-3, 7-5. Following a first round bye, Fritz had already gotten past Lorenzo Sonego and Denis Shapovalov in the previous two rounds.
This result and the entry into the quarterfinals will prove to be a bit of a relief for Fritz after he had gone four tournaments without winning three in a row.
And while Matteo Berrettini would prove to be a tougher competition than any of his previous opponents in Miami, his confidence would have returned too.
Berrettini Shocks de Minaur
Alex de Minaur has been one of the form players of the season and had reached the fourth round at the expense of the much-touted Joao Fonseca in his previous match. No surprises then that Berrettini had gone into his fourth round match against de Minaur as a 13/10 underdog.
And while Berrettini had his down moments as he looked to close out the match, missing out on four match-points, he also came back from 3-6 down in the tie-breaker to win the encounter 6-3, 7-6 (7). The match went on for over two hours.
Berrettini hadn’t had a lot of trouble earlier too, having defeated Hugo Gaston and Zizou Bergs in the second and third rounds respectively following an opening bye.
What his victory over de Minaur meant was that for the first time this season Berrettini had won three on the bounce.
Fritz v Berrettini Predictions
This is an interesting one given the kind of tennis both have played to get here. Where Fritz scores over Berrettini is his track record against the Italian player, having lost just one set over their previous four meetings. Backing a similar result here but we could see a bit of a fight in at least one of the sets.
