Aryna Sabalenka v Jasmine Paolini Head to Head
There have been four previous meetings at the highest level between these two players and Sabalenka leads 3-1 with wins at the 2020 Linz Open, 2023 China Open and 2024 WTA Finals. Paolini had surprised Sabalenka at the Indian Wells Open of 2022.
Sabalenka Makes it 6-0 against Zheng
Qinwen Zheng always knew she was going to be up against it when she took to court for her quarterfinal against the world number one Aryna Sabalenka.
Not only was she taking on the top-ranked player she was also playing someone she had featured against five times before this and lost every single time.
And while Sabalenka did face some fight from Zheng in their quarterfinals, especially in the second set, she came through in straight sets. Sabalenka came back from being 2-4 down in the second to win 6-2, 7-5.
This was her 21st win of the season to go with a mere four losses – making her the second-ranked player in the WTA Race to the Finals. Earlier in the tournament, the Indian Wells Open finalist had defeated Viktoriya Tomova, Elena-Gabriela Ruse and the defending champion Danielle Collins.
Paolini Eases Past Linette
Jasmine Paolini had announced herself to the world last year with a title win in Dubai and finals appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon.
This year, Paolini hadn’t done as well but still had an 8-5 win-loss record for the season coming into this competition.
She had a couple of potentially tough opponents on her way too, Ons Jabeur and Naomi Osaka. While Jabeur retired from their encounter, Paolini came back from a set down to defeat Osaka and set up a quarterfinal meeting with Magda Linette.
There were no issues in Linette match though. A rain delay of three hours did not cause any concerns either as Paolini clinched a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
In doing so, Paolini has become the first Italian to have made this far at this tournament.
Can she now cause the biggest upset of the season?.

Sabalenka has barely been tested all tournament and when she is in such mood, it seems highly unlikely she would be taken down by anyone other than someone playing to the best of their ability after having the skills to match her. Backing the world number one to clinch this in two.
