Aryna Sabalenka v Jessica Pegula Head to Head
There have been eight previous meetings between these two players and Sabalenka leads 6-2 on head to head. This includes two previous finals – the Cincinnati Open and US Open, both last year. And Sabalenka won them both.
What’s interesting to note here is that other than their first ever meeting way back in 2020, all the remaining seven matches between these two players have ended in two sets!
Sabalenka Routs Paolini
Aryna Sabalenka has lost two finals this year – one at the Australian Open where she went down to Madison Keys and the other in Indian Wells earlier this month where Mirra Andreeva came back from a set down to upset here.
That might have been frustrating for a player like Sabalenka who is really hungry to win everything but she hasn’t let those results affect her appetite – another final beckons for the world number one.
And what’s even more important to see is that Sabalenka has been clinical on her way to this final too.
Her most difficult match came in the fourth round against Danielle Collins who managed to take eight games off her. Other than that, she has barely lost anything and is coming off a 6-2, 6-2 drubbing of Jasmine Paolini in the semifinals.
So while Jessica Pegula has had a respectable record in recent times, it might take a lot to bring down the Belarusian player in this one.
Pegula in a Tight Win over Eala
Alexandra Eala might have been ranked outside the top 100 but she had ousted Iga Swiatek in her previous round and was never going to be a pushover. That showed in the semifinals too and at one point, Jessica Pegula might have wondered if she was also going to end up being Eala’s victim.
Pegula’s experience and probably Eala’s nerves of the situation looked to have bailed her out as she came through 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-3 to seal her maiden Miami Open finals berth.
The American has had a tough battle against a few of her opponents in this tournament. The Austin Open winner from earlier this year, Pegula was stretched to three sets by Anna Kalinskaya in the third round and then needed another three-setter against Emma Raducanu in the quarterfinals as well.
How Pegula recovers from these results while going up against a player who has beaten her in their last two meetings held in 2024 will be the key to her success. As would be the fact that Sabalenka isn’t used to having an opponent who plays aggressively and goes toe to toe with her power-hitting.
Can Pegula find a way to do that?
Sabalenka v Pegula Predictions
While Sabalenka might have lost her last two finals, we think she is too good a player to not grab another title here. Pegula’s performances here have been commendable but against Sabalenka, she might not have get too many chances and that could translate into a straight-set win for the world number one.
