The first round action at the 2025 Bogota Open continues on Tuesday, April 1 with Camila Osorio, Emiliana Arango and Francesca Jones taking to court today. Get the best predictions and tips for the day from WTA Bogota Open 2025.
Camila Osorio v Mariana Higuita Barraza
Camila Osorio has won this title on two previous occasions and it’s only fair she starts things off this time with one of the most straightforward first round encounters. She takes on fellow Colombian but a player ranked 1080 in the world, Mariana Higuita Barraza.
In fact, not only is Higuita Barraza ranked that low on the charts, the 17-year-old hasn’t played a match so far this season at any level. Interestingly, last year, Higuita Barraza had a wildcard to feature in this very tournament and had lost 6-0, 6-0 to Renata Zarazua.
Osorio will be gunning for a similar result, having come into this tournament on the back of a 5-5 win-loss record for the season. While four of her five defeats came against pre-match favourites, Osorio was sent packing from the first round of the Miami Open by 1/1 underdog Victoria Mboko, leaving a few question-marks around her performances.
That being said, Osorio has a solid record on clay and this should not cause too many issues here.
Osorio v Higuita Barraza Tip: Under 15.5 games in the match: 1/2
Emiliana Arango v Lucrezia Stefanini
This rivalry has already seen five previous meetings with Emiliana Arango leading Lucrezia Stefanini 3-2 on head to head. It started on the ITF circuit where the two faced off in 2021 and 2022 and won one apiece before Arango grabbed a qualifying victory in the 2024 Cluj-Napoca Open and defeated Stefanini in Parma that very year.
Stefanini came back to win their US Open qualifier late last season.
Arango has gone places over the last 12 months or so. The Colombian 24-year-old had ended the previous season outside the top 160 but then went on to win the title at the WTA 125 event in Cancun and then made the final of the Merida Open.
What that has meant is she is now 84th in the world, five away from her career-best. Strangely though, she opted not to participate at either Indian Wells or Miami and flew over to Antalya to take part in a WTA 125 event there on clay. She lost her opener there.
Stefanini has had her issues on clay and other than the odd win on the ITF circuit and WTA 125 tournaments, she has barely won a match at the highest level on this surface.
Which is why it’s Arango who should have no worries here to win and do that easily too.
Arango v Stefanini Tip: Arango to win in straight sets: 6/4
Francesca Jones v Julia Riera
It’s the 129th-ranked Francesca Jones taking on the world number 157 Julia Riera in what could turn out to be an interesting battle. These two have faced off in three previous matches, all of which came on clay and Jones leads 2-1. All three ended in straight sets too but two of them were on the ITF circuit and one, last year, as a part of a WTA 125 competition.
Jones, a semifinalist here in 2023, is coming off her first title win of the season on the clay courts of Vacaria, a tournament on the ITF circuit. She dropped just one set and that came against Leolia Jeanjean in the final.
Interestingly, Jones defeated Riera in that very tournament, winning their semifinal easily. Earlier in the season, Riera had lost in the first round of the Antalya Open, Cancun Open and Australian Open as well.
No surprises then that Jones starts off a favourite here but given the way they have gone in the past we could see Riera put up a better showing here.
Jones v Riera Tip: Games Handicap Reira +4.5: 10/13
