Roberto Bautista Agut v Yunchaokete Bu
Roberto Bautista Agut and Yunchaokete Bu will face in what will be their first ever career meeting when they take on each other in the first round of this clay court competition.
And it’s going to be a battle between Bu, who is yet to win a main draw match on clay in his career and Bautista Agut who is 1-7 on win-loss for the season – in short there might not be any clear winners here.
That being said, there’re a couple of indicators we will be using here – one is Bu’s performance in the only match he played on clay earlier this year. He was up against the top seeded Alexander Zverev in Rio and managed to stretch the German.
The other is the fact that Bautista Agut has struggled to win anything this season, making it so much difficult for him to even take any advantage on clay – we don’t quite know if Bautista Agut can shrug off this slump at his age of 36.
Hence, backing Bu to win this one.
Bautista Agut v Bu Tip: Bu to win: 1/1
Stan Wawrinka v Timofey Skatov
It’s the 161st-ranked Stan Wawrinka facing the world number 174 in this battle for the second round with both players in a fight for a rare main draw win.
Because Wawrinka has featured five tour-level tournaments and hasn’t won a single match while Skatov’s focus has been mainly in Challenger events given he hasn’t won as many wildcards as his opponent here. Again, even Skatov hasn’t grabbed a main draw at the ATP level – but that’s also because he hasn’t played in any other than the Australian Open.
This could lead to a bit of a close, thrilling piece but with Skatov having played a few Challenger tournaments on clay, and winning his qualifiers here as well, he might have a better chance.
Wawrinka v Skatov Tip: Skatov to win: 6/4
Dusan Lajovic v Christopher O’Connell
It’s the 87th-ranked Christopher O’Connell who will take to court for his first clay court match of the season when he takes on the 109th-ranked Dusan Lajovic for a place in the second round.
While O’Connell has had a steady season for someone ranked outside the top 80, he last won a main draw match on clay in May 2023 – a pointer towards his inclination towards playing on the surface, let alone being proficient enough.
On the other hand, Lajovic was a part of two of the three South American clay court competitions held on clay this year while also making it to the semifinal of the Girona Challenger which was hosted on red dirt too.
That’s why it’s no surprise he starts off a 3/5 favourite here and we will be backing those odds for a Lajovic win. A slightly riskier but possible win would be for a straight-set result for the Serb.
Lajovic v O’Connell Tip: Lajovic to win: 3/5
