Camila Osorio v Emina Bektas
These two players have faced off twice before this but never in the last seven years. Yes, that’s right, Osorio was a mere 17 years old when she toon on Bektas for the second time in their career and for the second time she lost.
Things have changed drastically since then with Osorio having made a reasonable name for herself in the sport and made a career-best ranking of 33rd. She is currently 54th in the world, a two-time winner at this competition and is coming off a 6-0, 6-1 rout of Mariana Isabel Higuita Barraza in her opener here.
On the other hand, Bektas was once a top-90 player but didn’t do too much better than that and has currently fallen to 186th in the world. She hasn’t played a lot on clay and when she won her opener against Maria Camila Torres Murcia, it was her first ever win at this level on red dirt.
This just points to how much of a difference in quality we are talking about between these two players and it’s no surprise that Osorio starts off a 1/7 favourite. Backing her to win this in straight sets too.
Osorio v Bektas Tip: Osorio to win in straight sets: 2/5
Tatjana Maria v Hanna Chang
World number 82 Tatjana Maria will be gunning for first ever quarterfinal appearance in a WTA tournament at this level for 2025 when she takes on USA’s Hanna Chang who is ranked 194th in the world.
Maria might have started off a 7/11 favourite in her opener against Chloe Paquet but the match did not go as expected for her. Paquet grabbed the first set in a tie-breaker and had chances to get past Maria in the second as well before the German player clinched it 7-5, 6-4.
This made it Maria’s first clay court win of the season and also her first since her second round appearance at the Italian Open last year. She will now have a chance to double that count when she takes on surprise second round entrant Chang, whose record on clay at any level hasn’t been too appealing.
Chang, who has won all of her nine ITF circuit competitions on hardcourt surfaces, was a 5/2 underdog going into her opener against Varvara Gracheva. She looked to be headed out when she lost the first set only to stun her opponent by dropping just three games in the next two.
Maria’s experience will prove to be too much for her though.
Maria v Chang Tip: Maria to win in straight sets: 10/11
Iva Jovic v Julia Riera
This is a first time meeting between players ranked in their 150s, with the 150th-ranked Iva Jovic taking on Julia Riera who is 157th in the world at the moment. What that means is this is a rare opportunity for either to make it to the quarterfinal of a WTA 250 event.
Jovic stunned Alycia Parks in the first round, grabbing the win in straight sets to come through. She had earlier made the second round at the Australian Open and the Indian Wells Open as well.
Riera, on the other hand, was involved in a keen tussle with Britain’s Francesca Jones but late in the third set was helped by her opponent collapsing on the court. Jones had to retire from the match and Riera was through to the next stage.
Looking at the two players’ experience on clay, Jovic first played on this surface last year. She made the final of an ITF event and entered the second round at a WTA 125 event in Charleston. It looks like she knows her way around this surface.
Because that would be needed against Riera who has a career record of 156-85 on this surface across all levels. So while Riera starts off a 6/4 underdog in this one, we can expect to be a fighting match that goes down to the wire.
Jovic v Riera Tip: Games Handicap Riera +4.5: 4/7
