Jasmine Paolini, Emma Navarro and Ekaterina Alexandrova will be among those in 2025 WTA Stuttgart Open action on Tuesday, April 15 and you can get the best predictions and tips for the day from this tournament today.
Jasmine Paolini v Eva Lys
World number six Jasmine Paolini has an interesting first round meeting against the 68th-ranked Eva Lys with the two going up against each other for the second time in their careers. Their first meeting had also come in 2025 itself with Paolini having gotten the better of Lys in straight sets in Dubai.
Paolini now moves to a surface on which she had made the final of a Grand Slam last year – she fought her way to the title-decider round at the French Open with wins over Mirra Andreeva, Elena Rybakina and Bianca Andreescu on her way.
Which is why it’s a bit of a surprise she starts out as long as 3/5 against Lys who hasn’t played a lot of top level clay court stuff. Sure, Lys made it to the quarterfinal at La Bisbal earlier this month in what was her first clay court competition of the season but even that was a WTA 125 event.
Her real test will come here against a player who has not only done rather well on clay but also is a ranked way higher and has beaten Lys in their previous meeting.
Paolini v Lys Tip: Paolini to win: 3/5
Emma Navarro v Beatriz Haddad Maia
This is an interesting one between the world number 11 Emma Navarro and the 17th-ranked Beatriz Haddad Maia. Why interesting? Because there have been three previous meetings between these two players and all of them have come on clay too with Haddad Maia having won two of them at the Madrid Open and Strasbourg Open last year.
Navarro’s first clay court appearance on clay this season came at Charleston and she managed to get to the third round there before going down to Amanda Anisimova. This followed a fourth round appearance at the French Open last season and then having made the third round at the Olympics too.
In essence, Navarro is no mug when it comes to clay court tennis.
Haddad Maia is a former French Open semifinalist, a indicator how well she does on clay but comes into this tournament on the back of some wretched form. In fact her mere two wins so far this year means she is 94th on the Race to the Finals ranking.
That gives Navarro a solid chance to take advantage of Haddad Maia’s poor form and carve out a straightforward win in this one.
Navarro v Haddad Maia Tip: Navarro to win in straight sets: 4/5
Ekaterina Alexandrova v Liudmilla Samsonova
In an all-Russian battle, the world number 19 Liudmilla Samsonova faces the 22nd-ranked Ekaterina Alexandrova for a place in the second round. Their previous three matches have resulted in a 2-1 head to head record in favour of Alexandrova but they have neve faced off on clay before this.
A title winner at Linz and a semifinalist in Doha, Alexandrova entered the clay court swing at the Charleston Open where she defeated Ann Li, Diana Shnaider and then upset Qinwen Zheng on her way to the quarterfinals.
Samsonova, on the other hand, was a semifinalist in Adelaide to kick things off before making it to the fourth round at the Indian Wells Open with wins over Daria Kasatkina and Jasmine Paolini.
She hasn’t played on clay so far this season and over the years has acquired a modest record on clay. Like she was a semifinalist at Strasbourg last year and then entered the third round at the French Open but won just one of her remaining four matches.
Things were a lot worse for Alexandrova on this surface last year with just one win coming from seven tournaments for her. So while on paper she is a 4/6 favourite here, we think things could get even closer than that.
Alexandrova v Samsonova Tip: Samsonova to win a set – Yes: 1/2
