WTA Stuttgart Open 2025 Predictions for Thursday, April 17 Feat. Navarro v Ostapenko, Pegula v Frech & Gauff v Seidel

The second round action at the 2025 WTA Stuttgart Open continues on Thursday, April 17 with Emma Navarro, Jessica Pegula and Cori Gauff leading the way and you can get the best predictions and tips for the day from this tournament today.

Emma Navarro v Jelena Ostapenko

World number 11 Emma Navarro will face the 24th-ranked Jelena Ostapenko in a second round match. It will also be their first ever meeting.

Navarro, who kick-started her clay court swing two weeks ago at the Charleston Open with a third round appearance, did not have a lot of problems in her opener here. She overcame Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-0 to make the second round.

Ostapenko hasn’t had the best of seasons other than her finals appearance in Doha, having entered this tournament on the back of a 1-5 win-loss record over the last six matches. As a result she was a 6/5 underdog against Dayana Yastremska but that did not bother her too much by the looks of things.

She went on to take a 6-3, 3-0 lead over Yastremska before her opponent retired from the encounter.

This leads to what could be an interesting meeting between these two especially given both players have done well on clay in their careers. We could see a three-setter here.

Navarro v Ostapenko Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5

Jessica Pegula v Magdalena Frech

World number three Jessica Pegula will take on Poland’s Magdalena Frech in the second round in what will be their third meeting. Pegula had won both their previous matches, including one on clay in Madrid two years ago.

As far as form goes, Pegula’s results have been second to none this year. Over the eight tournaments she has won 25 matches and lost just six, and won two titles in the process – which includes a title win at the Charleston Open two weeks ago.

She had an opening round bye here and given how well she has gone about her business, she could well be one of the players to watch out for in this tournament.

Frech might have made it through to the second round but even she would be surprised by the manner in which she was pushed by Sara Errani. She was on a five-match losing streak coming into this and needed three sets and a tie-breaker in the final set to come through.

Against Pegula, Frech will need to do a lot better to survive and unless we see a miraculous change in fortune, we can expect a straightforward Pegula victory.

Pegula v Frech Tip: Pegula to win in straight sets: 1/2

Cori Gauff v Ella Seidel

Cori Gauff will be facing Ella Seidel for the first time in her career and it’s no surprise that the world number four starts off a 1/7 favourite against her 124th-ranked opponent.

Due credit to Seidel though for the manner in which she came through in her opener – defeating the much more experienced Tatjana Maria after falling a set behind. Seidel won 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 to grab her first main draw win of the season.

Against Gauff, who had a first round bye, things could get a lot tougher though. The American might not have played on clay this season but her career performances on clay have shown her pedigree.

She was a semifinalist at both, the Italian Open and French Open last year, with Iga Swiatek defeating her both times. Here, against Seidel, she can be expected to romp away.

Gauff v Seidel Tip: Gauff to win in straight sets: 1/2
