The first round action at the 2025 ATP Madrid Masters kick-starts from Wednesday, April 23 as Nuno Borges and Jaume Munar lead the charge. You can get the best predictions and tips for the day from this tournament here.

Nuno Borges v Pablo Carreno Busta

In a match that pits a seasoned Spanish campaigner against a rising Portuguese talent, Pablo Carreño Busta will will take on Nuno Borges in the opening round of the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open.

This will be the first career meeting between the 41st-ranked Borges and his world number 96 opponent.

Borges, known for his solid all-court game and heavy forehand, has steadily improved on clay over the past two seasons. He’s compiled a 3-2 record on the surface so far in 2025, including a run to the third round at the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this month. His movement and consistency make him well-suited to the demands of clay.

Carreño Busta, on the other hand, returned from a long injury layoff last year and enters Madrid having needed to grind his way back to the top level tennis with multiple appearances on the Challenger circuit.

A former world No. 10 and Roland Garros quarterfinalist, the Spaniard has an impressive clay pedigree — but it remains to be seen how match-ready he is. His baseline-heavy, grinding style is tailor-made for this surface, especially in altitude conditions like Madrid’s, which can reward his topspin-heavy patterns.

If Borges can maintain his recent form we think he can get back his opponent here.

Borges v Carreno Busta Tip: Borges to win: 8/11

Roberto Bautista Agut v Jaume Munar

An all-Spanish showdown is set for the first round of the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open, as veteran Roberto Bautista Agut faces off against the younger Jaume Munar.

Their head-to-head record stands at 2–1 in favor of Bautista Agut, with Munar securing a notable victory in their most recent encounter at the 2024 French Open, winning in four sets. That was also their most recent meeting.

Bautista Agut, renowned for his flat groundstrokes and relentless consistency, has historically found success on faster surfaces.

However, his adaptability has allowed him to perform commendably on clay, as evidenced by his career achievements. In contrast, Munar thrives on clay courts, utilizing heavy topspin and exceptional movement to outlast opponents in extended rallies.

In the current season, Bautista Agut has had a poor win-loss record on clay. Other than a three-set victory over Bu Yunchaokete in Bucharest and one over Brandon Nakashima in Monte-Carlo he has lost three.

Incidentally Munar has also won just two clay court main draw matches this season.

Given Munar’s recent victory over Bautista Agut and his proficiency on clay, he enters this match with a psychological edge.

Bautista Agut v Munar Tip: Munar to win: 11/20

Francisco Comesana v Pedro Martinez

In a compelling first-round matchup at the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open, Argentina’s Francisco Comesaña faces Spain’s Pedro Martínez. This will be their first meeting on the ATP Tour.

Comesaña, a 24-year-old right-hander, has had a breakthrough season. He boasts a 15–11 overall record in 2025, with a 12–7 mark on clay.

Notably, he reached the semifinals at the Rio Open, defeating world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in a three-set thriller. His game is characterized by heavy topspin forehands and solid baseline play, making him well-suited for clay courts.

Martínez, 27, is a seasoned clay-court specialist with a career record of 396–210 on the surface.

In 2025, he holds a 10–13 overall record, including 5–6 on clay which isn’t great but he had made the semifinal in Buenos Aires and a quarterfinal appearance in Bucharest.

Martínez’s game relies on consistency and strategic point construction, which can be effective on slower surfaces.

Given Comesaña’s recent form and confidence, he enters the match with momentum. However, Martínez’s experience and tactical acumen on clay cannot be underestimated. This match promises to be a closely contested battle between youth and experience.

Comesana v Martinez Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5

Laslo Djere v Fabio Fognini

World number 71 Laslo Djere and the 112th-ranked and qualifier Fabio Fognini are set to clash in the opening round of the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open. Their head-to-head record stands evenly at 2–2, with their most recent encounter in the 2024 Marrakech Open, where Fognini triumphed in three sets.

Djere, known for his heavy topspin and baseline consistency, has had a solid start to the 2025 season. He boasts a 17–7 overall record, with a notable 14–4 on clay. His performance includes a semifinal run in Santiago and a quarterfinal appearance in Buenos Aires.

Fognini, a seasoned clay-court specialist, has struggled to find form this season, winning just three of his nine overall matches and none in the main draw of events. His experience and shot-making abilities remain threats, but consistency has been an issue and at 37, he isn’t getting any younger either.

Wins in the qualifiers of this event over Alexander Ritschard and Rinky Hijikata would have helped the confidence but Djere still holds the aces. Given Djere’s current form and confidence on clay, he enters the match as the favorite.

Djere v Fognini Tip: Djere to win: 3/10

Other ATP Madrid Masters 2025 Predictions for the Day

  • Roman Safiullin v Arthur Rinderknech: Safiullin to win: 8/15
  • Alex Michelsen v Alexander Bublik: Michelsen to win: 13/12
  • Dusan Lajovic v Ethan Quinn: Lajovic to win: 4/7
