Paula Badosa v Elina Avanesyan Preview
Head-to-Head: World number 12 Badosa has never played Elina Avanesyan who is ranked 43rd in the world.
Badosa’s career looked like it had hit a bit of a roadblock as she fell to 64th on the WTA charts at the end of the 2023 season thanks to a plethora of poor results. The thing to remember here is that at one point she was second in the world.
In 2024, however, Badosa came back strongly to win a title in Washington but even more importantly, she showed consistency in her other results as well.
This included a fourth round at Wimbledon, semifinal in Cincinnati and Beijing while also making it to the quarterfinal of the US Open.
She takes on an opponent who is currently at her career-best ranking of 43rd on the WTA charts. This comes about on the back of consistent performances over the last five years – finishing each of the season at a rank better than the previous one.
Avanesyan was 723rd at the end of the 2019 season and followed that up with 641st, 222nd, 153rd and 73rd as her season-ending ranking in each of the following seasons.
And she comes into this encounter on the back of a three-set win over Rebecca Sramkova. We could see a bit of a fight here.
Badosa v Avanesyan prediction: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
Aryna Sabalenka v Renata Zarazua Preview
Head-to-Head: Sabalenka and Zarazua have never played each other in a competitive match before this.
Following her four titles in 2024 including two at the Grand Slam level, Sabalenka returns to the WTA circuit with her first match of the 2025 season against a player who has never been ranked in the top 50.
That by itself should speak volumes about how things might go in this encounter despite Zarazua having crushed Viktoriya Tomova in her opener – winning 6-0, 6-3.
Sabalenka won’t be too rusty either having featured in the World Tennis League only a couple of weeks ago. We expect her to show no mercy and romp home to a straight-set win here.
Badosa v Avanesyan prediction: Sabalenka to win in straight sets: 1/10
Anna Kalinskaya v Ashlyn Krueger Preview
Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came in Osaka in 2023 and Krueger had cruised to a straight-set win over Kalinskaya in that quarterfinal.
Kalinskaya had an opening round bye in this competition on account of being a seeded player and that came about following her brilliant previous season.
The Russian player hit a career-best ranking of 11th in the world and while she is yet to win a WTA title – which is a bit of a surprise for a top-10 player – Kalinskaya has a lot to remember from the previous season.
She made the final at WTA Dubai following a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open and then was a finalist at Berlin as well A fourth round at Wimbledon followed before she ended her season at the quarterfinals of the Ningbo Open.
Starting out as a 3/10 favourite in her opener against Moyuka Uchjima, Krueger was stretched to a three-setter in her opener here.
This is already her best showing at this competition as a result of that but Krueger will need to do a lot better than that as she looks to break into the top 50 for the first time in her career. Things could get a lot tougher in round two though.
Kalinskaya v Krueger prediction: Kalinskaya to win: 3/5
Mirra Andreeva v Anna Blinkova Preview
Head-to-Head: Russians Andreeva and Blinkova have never faced off against each other before this.
Just 17 years of age, Andreeva will enter the season at her career-best ranking of 16th in the world. And having reached the quarterfinal of this tournament last year, she will have the kind of confidence that is usually associated with the teenagers of this generation.
And why not? After all, Andreeva had grabbed her first WTA title last year – which came on clay – to go with her semifinal appearance at the French Open, quarterfinals at Cincinnati and Beijing and a runner-up trophy at the Ningbo Open.
As opposed to that, Blinkova has fallen to 77th in the world following a poor run in 2024 in which she had won just 25 to go with her 32 defeats.
She clinched a straight-set win over Sara Bejlek despite starting out a second-favourite in that encounter and while that would give her some confidence, getting the better of Mirra might not be on the table as things stand.
Andreeva v Blinkova prediction: Andreeva to win in straight sets: 3/5
