Yoshihito Nishioka v Jiri Lehecka Preview
Head-to-Head: World number 28 Lehecka and the 69th-ranked Nishioka have never faced off against each other before this.
Having played in this tournament three times before this, Nishioka had been knocked out in the first round every single time. Which is why, having made it to the main draw this time after winning the qualifying rounds, Nishioka would have been hoping to break that hoodoo.
And that’s exactly what he did when the Japanese player overcame Arthur Rinderknech in his opener. He won 6-3, 6-4 to win his first ever main draw match in this competition.
Nishioka now has an even bigger challenge and that’s to take down a player who is ranked more than 40 places above him. And Lehecka is not just ranked ahead of him he is also coming off a sterling first round showing.
Having gone up against the world number 13 Holger Rune in the opener and despite starting out a 6/4 underdog, Lehecka blasted past his opponent in straight sets.
A winner at the Adelaide International last year, Lehecka starts off a heavy favourite to grab another win here.
Nishioka v Lehecka prediction: Djokovic to win in straight sets: 1/4
Grigor Dimitrov v Aleksandar Vukic Preview
Head-to-Head: There has been one main draw match at the 2023 Shanghai Masters and another held in the qualifiers of the Queen’s Club tennis that very year and Dimitrov has won them both in straight sets.
When Dimitrov won the Brisbane International last season, it was his first ever tournament win in seven years. He continued that form throughout the year and while he didn’t win any more competitions, the Bulgarian did manage to end the season ranked 10th in the world.
And while he was tested in the opening round here by Yannick Hanfmann, Dimitrov came through in straight sets. His 7-6 (5), 6-3 win in the first round took him an hour and 49 minutes and sets himself up against a player he has already beaten in the past.
At that point of time, Dimitrov wasn’t even in the best form.
So while Vukic might have upset the 1/1 odds offered for his win over David Goffin for a win, he will find it tough to hold his own against Dimitrov. The good news for Vukic is he did not use up too much time to get past Goffin, winning 6-2, 6-3.
Still, backing an easy Dimitrov win here.
Dimitrov v Vukic prediction: Dimitrov to win in straight sets: 3/4
Benjamin Bonzi v Nicolas Jarry Preview
Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came on the Challenger circuit in a match in 2022 on clay where Bonzi won in three, hard-fought sets.
Bonzi was forced to come through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw here but was a 4/6 favourite going into his match against Alejandro Tabilo.
He sure didn’t play like a favourite as he was kept on the court for two hours and 51 minutes by Tabilo before Bonzi came through. The Frenchman won 7-6 (8), 6-7 (5), 6-4 having also saved three set-points in the opening set.
Things could get a whole lot tougher for him when he faces Jarry in the second. The Chilean player is 35th in the world and while he has a particular fondness for playing on clay, he has had his moments in hardcourt competitions.
Jarry was stretched in the first round here by Mariano Navone, needing nearly two hours to get past him 7-5, 7-6 (7). In doing so he saved a set-point as well in the second set, enduring 10 aces and a break of serve in the match.
Expecting a tight battle here which might go to the third set.
Bonzi v Jarry prediction: Three sets in the match: 6/5
Jordan Thompson v Alex Michelsen Preview
Head-to-Head: World number 26 Thompson has beaten Michelsen twice – once on the Challenger circuit in 2023 and then again in Los Cabos in 2024.
A semifinalist in this tournament last year, Thompson had drawn former Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini in the first round here and unsurprisingly had started off a 13/10 underdog.
When he lost the first set to Berrettini, it looked like things were going to script before he mounted a fightback.
In the end, Thompson prevailed over Berrettini in a three-setter than lasted two hours and 15 minutes, having survived two breaks of serves.
Michelsen prevented an all-Aussie second round encounter but not before he was forced to be on court for a whopping two hours and 22 minutes and after he had saved a match-point and squandered four of his own.
Can he now make it two Aussie scalps in a row?
Thompson v Michelsen prediction: Thompson to win: 4/6
