Aryna Sabalenka v Yulia Putintseva Preview
Head-to-Head: Sabalenka and Putintseva have featured in two matches with each other before this and they have both won one apiece. Putintseva went 1-0 up at the 2019 US Open before Sabalenka levelled things out in Wuhan last year in a three-setter
After getting a first round bye, Sabalenka opened her 2025 campaign with a second round match against Renata Zarazua and while she had her issues in the opening set, the world number one completed an easy, straight-set win in the end.
Sabalenka was on court for 65 minutes and lost her serve once in the opening set before grabbing eight games in a row to win her opener.
Her opponent Putintseva is coming off a title win on the grass courts of Birmingham last year and also earned an opening bye as a result of being a seeded player here. She lived up to her 2/5 favourites odds against Mccartney Kessler, grabbing a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
Putintseva, who was ranked 66th at the end of the 2023 season, had managed to turn things around as she climbed up 37 places over the next 12 months.
While that might not be enough to challenge Sabalenka’s might, she will do well to remember that she had defeated Cori Gauff in Cincinnati last year.
Sabalenka v Putintseva prediction: Sabalenka to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 6/5
Ons Jabeur v Elina Avanesyan Preview
Head-to-Head: They have had one previous meeting which came in the 2024 Miami Open. Avanesyan had stunned Jabeur in that second round encounter there.
Jabeur will be relieved at the way she has started off this season.
A first round win over Saisai Zheng was on expected lines but there weren’t too many takers putting Jabeur up as a favourite against Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second. In beating her Russian opponent 6-3, 6-2 in the second round, the Tunisian had registered back to back wins for the first time since Wimbledon last year.
Such was her struggles in 2024 that the former world number two and two-time runner-up at Wimbledon fell to 42nd in the world at the end of the season.
She will now look to avenge her Miami loss to Avanesyan who is currently at her career-best ranking of 43rd in the world. And a glimpse of what’s made her climb up the charts has been on display already in this competition.
After getting past Rebecca Sramkova in the first round, Avanesyan was a 3/1 underdog when she scraped through her second round match against Paula Badosa.
Avanesyan will be confident about a Miami encore here but could meet a far tougher opponent this time.
Jabeur v Avanesyan prediction: Three sets in the match: 6/5
Mirra Andreeva v Linda Noskova Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between these two players before this, both of which came in 2024. Noskova won in Brisbane, while Andreeva responded with a victory in Madrid.
Following a first round bye, Andreeva kick-started her 2025 campaign with a fairly straightforward second round victory against Anna Blinkova in the second round. She won 6-4, 6-4 in a match lasting an hour and 26 minutes.
While Andreeva was broken twice in the match, that could be put down to rustiness as she raced past her opponent for a third round entry.
Andreeva, who is currently at her career-best ranking of 16th in the world, is coming off her maiden career title and would now love to emulate her performance at this competition last year when she made the last eight stage.
Standing in her way is Noskova, who is herself just one short of her career-best ranking of 25th and is coming off a comfortable second round win.
A semifinalist at this competition last year, Noskova crashed through the Anca Todoni party, defeating her Romanian opponent 6-1, 6-4 to make the third round. She won’t be making things any easier for Andreeva either.
Andreeva v Noskova prediction: Noskova to win a set – Yes: 1/2
Daria Kasatkina v Polina Kudermetova Preview
Head-to-Head: Kasatkina and Kudermetova have never played against each other in a competitive match.
A quarterfinalist at this competition last year, Kasatkina took a step closer to reaching the same stage when she edged past Peyton Stearns in her second round match.
After getting a first round bye, Kasatkina would have been a tad wary of facing Stearns first up given how prolific her opponent has been. And those fears proved to be justified as Stearns kept her on court for a whopping three hours and 23 minutes.
Kasatkina was forced to overcome eight breaks of serves in the match to come through in three sets and set up this meeting with a fellow Russian.
Kudermetova is a well known name in women’s tennis but that’s because Polina’s sister Veronika has done a lot of heavy-lifting and even broken into the top 10.
Now that poor form has pushed Veronika to 72nd in the world, it seems to be the turn of Polina to take over the mantle and with her performances in this competition so far she will be breaking into the top 100 soon.
These performances include wins in the qualifiers here to make the main draw before overcoming Xinyu Wang to set up a meeting with the world number 27 Liudmilla Samsonova.
And when she managed to overturn a one set deficit to beat Samsonova, Polina would have been thrilled. She might face some more difficulties against Kasatkina but the confidence won’t be lacking.
Kasatkina v Kudermetova prediction: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
