Andrey Rublev v Fabian Marozsan Preview
Head-to-Head: There has been one previous meeting between these two players which came on the clay courts of the Umag Open last season. Rublev was made to work hard for that win.
Starting off as the top seed in the competition, Rublev had an opening round bye and as a result of that, will kick-start his engagements in the new year with this second round match. And he will have much to prove as well after having fallen from his career-high ranking of fifth to his current eighth.
Rublev did win a couple of titles in 2024 – at Madrid and Hong Kong – and made the final of the Canadian Open but he would have liked to do a lot better at the Grand Slams where his best showing came at the Australian Open where he made the quarterfinal.
He shouldn’t have too much problem here against Marozsan, a player who was once ranked 36th in the world but has fallen to 58th as a result of his struggles in 2024.
The good news for Marozsan is he has already done better at this tournament than he had last year where he had lost in the opener. He beat Roman Safiullin in his first round here despite starting out a 7/5 underdog but will that be enough for him to take down another Russian player?
Rublev v Marozsan prediction: Rublev to win in straight sets: 4/5
Lorenzo Musetti v Gabriel Diallo Preview
Head-to-Head: Their only previous match came in the 2023 Davis Cup where Diallo had surprised Musetti in straight sets.
Musetti is 17th in the world, just two away from his career-best ranking and a win here will already mean he has done better than his previous season’s performance. That would be a nice launchpad for him to kick-start his journey into being close to his career-best and then onward to try and break into the top 10.
The 22-year-old, however, does have a better record on clay than in hardcourt competitions but his best performance in 2024 came on grass where he made the final at Queen’s and followed that up with a semifinal appearance at Wimbledon.
Up against him is a player who has never been better than 86th in the world but he has shown vast improvement.
In fact, by making it to the main draw here following his wins in the qualifiers and then defeating Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round, he has already improved to 85th in the live rankings.
With that kind of confidence, he might give Musetti a bit of a fight but we think the Italian player should still come through.
Musetti v Diallo prediction: Musetti to win: 7/10
Nuno Borges v Jaume Munar Preview
Head-to-Head: They have faced off at last year’s Madrid Masters in their only previous meeting with Munar having won in straight sets.
Having gotten knocked out in the first round of this competition last year, Borges looked to be headed the same way when he lost his serve in the third set by Y Bu.
Bu served for the match at 5-3 but was broken back and then in a close tie-breaker that followed, Borges managed to steal a three-set victory.
It was a rare win for Borges in a hardcourt match at this level having achieved a lot of his success on clay.
Borges will now face a proper clay court specialist in the form of Jaume Munar who sealed off an even bigger shock when he downed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his opening round match.
Munar had gone into the match at 21/10 odds to win it and when he lost the first set it looked to be headed to script. He pulled off the proverbial rabbit out of the hat though, as he broke Fokina early in both the second and third set to scrape through to a win.
Borges holds a slight edge here.
Borges v Munar prediction: Borges to win: 3/5
Juncheng Shang v Pedro Martinez Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between them, at the 2022 Rio Open and another on the Challenger circuit in 2024. Both were on clay and Martinez has won them both.
Shang was an obvious favourite going into his opener against local lad and wildcard entrant Coleman Wong and while the Hong Kong national put up a brave front, there was only one winner.
In a match lasting an hour and 32 minutes, Shang clinched a spot in the second round 7-6 (3), 6-4.
Having made the semifinal at this competition last year, Shang will now look to move a step closer to that performance when he takes on a clay court specialist in Martinez.
Martinez had come into his opener against Francesco Passaro as a teeny-weeny favourite at 17/20 and eased to a 6-4, 6-4 result. He has, however, struggled in hardcourt competitions otherwise and might not have much of a chance against his 50th-ranked opponent.
Shang v Martinez prediction: Shang to win in straight sets: 5/6
