Fabian Marozsan v Juncheng Shang Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been three previous meetings between these two, including two in the qualifying stages of the 2023 Australian Open and French Open. Shang leads 2-1.
Marozsan will be on the seventh heaven having overturned 3/1 odds to defeat the top seeded Andrey Rublev in the previous match.
When he grabbed the first set of that match in a scrappy opening and was then laid low in the second by Rublev it looked like Marozsan’s fight had ended. And then suddenly, Marozsan came back to break Rublev in the sixth game of the decider to clinch a shock victory.
He had earlier overcame Roman Safiullin in the same manner, overcoming odds and a higher-ranked opponent.
The Hungarian now faces Juncheng Shang who routed Pedro Martinez in the second, dropping just four games on his way to winning it.
In the earlier round, his first match of the season, Shang had been stretched by Hong Kong national Coleman Wong before coming through in straight sets.
Expecting a tight match but one that goes Shang’s way for his overall performances on this surface.
Shang v Marozsan prediction: Shang to win in three sets: 3/1
Cameron Norrie v Kei Nishikori Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between these two players, at the 2019 Wimbledon and 2021 Washington Open. Nishikori has won them both.
Norrie was expected to win his second round match against Lorenzo Sonego with odds of 3/5 for his victory. And while he did that in the end, the Brit was taken to three sets by his Italian opponent.
In a gruelling match that lasted two hours and 22 minutes, Norrie came away a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 winner thanks to his disciplined serving. He faced just three break-points in the entire match, was broken once – which eventually lost him the second set – but got the better of Sonego’s serve five times.
This follows his straight-set win over Learner Tien in his opener.
While on paper, Norrie should not have a lot of trouble against Kei Nishikori, the former world number four is showing some of his old sparkle.
And this was on display when he sent Karen Khachanov packing from the tournament in a three-setter. This followed a straight-set victory against Denis Shapovalov in the first round.
What’s interesting to see is that Nishikori was second favourite in both those matches – 7/5 in the first and 11/10 in the second round – but overturned those odds to turn the game in his favour.
He could give Norrie a run here.
Norrie v Nishikori prediction: Three sets in the match: 6/5
Arthur Fils v Alexandre Muller Preview
Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came at the 2024 Italian Open and Muller had won that second round match easily,
Following a first round bye on account of being a top four seed in the competition, Fils was pushed a tad in his second round encounter by Zizou Bergs but came away with a straight-set win.
In a match lasting an hour and 41 minutes, Fils came away a 7-6 (7), 6-4 winner but things could have gotten a lot tougher for him had he not managed to save a set-point in the opening set.
Bergs came back to break the Fils serve in the second set having fallen behind but the Frenchman broke right back before serving it out to march into the quarterfinals.
If the Fils match was a keen tussle, we probably already have a nomination for the most thrilling match of the year as Muller edged past Miomir Kecmanovic.
Muller was a 7/5 underdog going into the encounter but nearly three and a half hours later had displayed a lot of fight to get past his Serbian opponent. After losing the first set, Muller grabbed the second set via a tie-breaker and then warded off two match-points in the third before winning it.
He might not get too many chances against Fils though.
Fils v Muller prediction: Fils to win: 3/10
Lorenzo Musetti v Jaume Munar Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been four previous meetings between these two players of which two have come on the Challenger circuit. Munar leads 3-1 having won all those matches on clay but on the grass of 2023 Wimbledon, it was Musetti who registered his first and only win over Munar.
Musetti had an opening round bye and the world number 17, who is two spots below his career-best, took on Gabriel Diallo in the second round – his first encounter of the season.
If one thought there might have been any rustiness, they were wrong as Musetti cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Diallo and in turn sealed his quarterfinal berth against Jaume Munar.
It took him nearly an hour and a half but Musetti did not drop his serve even once in the encounter.
Munar’s second successive win in the competition was a bit of a surprise again. After having entered his first round match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at 21/10 odds and having beaten him, Munar shocked Nuno Borges in straight sets.
The 7/5 underdog carved out a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Borges to enter this first ATP quarterfinal since March 2024. He will carry some confidence into this but we back Musetti to clinch this one.
Musetti v Munar prediction: Musetti to win in straight sets: 5/6
