Tomas Martin Etcheverry v Tristan Schoolkate Preview
Head-to-Head: Etcheverry and Schoolkate have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Before coming into this competition, Etcheverry featured in the United Cup for Argentina and ended on a 1-1 win-loss note. It wasn’t enough to take Argentina into the next round.
In his opener at that tournament, Etcheverry was soundly beaten by Alex de Minaur while he then went on to defeat Billy Harris in three sets.
Etcheverry now faces another Aussie, only this one’s ranked 173rd in the world and playing as a wild-card entrant.
Schoolkate overcame James Duckworth in the first qualifier of the Brisbane International last week in what was a surprise result. Mikhail Kukushkin, however, got the better of him in the second.
It was that first result though that would have got him the eyeballs and he now has a chance to cause an upset – Schoolkate starts 12/5 underdog here – against a player more proficient on clay.
Etcheverry v Schoolkate prediction: Schoolkate to win a set – Yes: 1/1
Roman Safiullin v Manuel Guinard Preview
Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came on the Challenger circuit in 2021 and Safiullin had won that in straight sets.
Once ranked 36th in the world, Safiullin has fallen to 62nd at the moment and a part of that can be related to what was on show last week in Hong Kong.
Safiullin had entered the tournament as a favourite to defeat Fabian Marozsan with bookmakers offering 1/2 for his win. Instead, Safiullin fell away rather quickly in straight sets to crash out of the tournament in the very first round.
The good news for Safiullin is that he now starts off this competition against a player who has never been in the top 100 in the ATP Rankings. More vitally, Manuel Guinard is currently 261st ranked and enters the main draw here as a lucky loser.
Which is what should allow Safiullin to earn himself his first win of the season with a straight-set victory expected out of him.
Safiullin v Guinard prediction: Safiullin to win in straight sets: 1/2
Arthur Cazaux v Adam Walton Preview
Head-to-Head: Cazaux had beaten Walton in their only previous meeting that came in 2024 on the Challenger circuit.
This is a battle between a player ranked 80th in Arthur Cazaux and his opponent who is 91st in the world. However, Adam Walton will also have some crowd support as a local and that could play a bit of a part in what could be a close battle.
Cazaux had featured in Brisbane last week and fell very easily to Dusan Lajovic in the opening round there. Lajovic was expected to do that, having started off a 1/4 favourite but surely Cazaux would have expected himself to come up with a better showing.
On the other hand, Walton went down fighting to Frances Tiafoe in his opener at Brisbane last but then followed it up with wins over Lajovic himself and Rinky Hijikata here in the qualifiers.
We could see Walton come up with a performance to remember here.
Cazaux v Walton prediction: Walton to win: 1/1
Li Tu v James Duckworth Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been four previous meetings between Tu and Duckworth but all of them came on the Challenger circuit. Duckworth leads 3-1.
Tu Li is already 28 years in age but hasn’t done too much of note at the highest level. His career-best ranking of 174th rank paints a picture that won’t make him too chuffed but the good news is that he ended the previous season at his career best-best ATP Ranking.
Which is what should give him hope when he takes on fellow Aussie and world number 94 James Duckworth.
Duckworth was sent packing by Tristan Schoolkate in the Brisbane qualifiers last week and needed to win two matches to make the main draw here at Adelaide.
And while he starts off a 1/2 favourite here, it must be quickly added that Li Tu won’t be far behind in the match-up – in short, at 9/5, it looks like Tu has some mouth-watering odds to be backed against who could be very evenly matched.
Tu v Duckworth prediction: Tu to win: 9/5
