Magda Linette v Maya Joint Preview
Head-to-Head: No previous matches have been played between Linette and Joint.
Magda Linette hadn’t make the kind of start she would have hoped for in the season, losing to Mccartaney Kessler in the opening round at Brisbane last week.
And even here against Varvara Gracheva, the former world number 19 had her worries. Playing the 69th-ranked Gracheva here, Linette was kept on court for over two and a half hours and needed three sets to come through.
Linette’s serve was broken five times and what helped her was that she got ample opportunities to get past Gracheva’s serve and managed to do it six times.
Her opponent in the second round is Maya Joint, a wildcard entrant who is coming off a second round appearance in Brisbane. Add that to her punishing win over Olga Danilovic in the first round here and she could prove to be quite a handful in this encounter.
The bookmakers have installed Linette as the favourite but only just – she starts off at 17/20 as compared to Joint being at 10/11.
Linette v Joint prediction: Three sets in the match: 6/5
Amanda Anisimova v Anna Bondar Preview
Head-to-Head: This will be the first meeting between Anisimova and Bondar.
Following her first round exit at the Auckland Open at the hands of Alycia Parks, Amanda Anisimova needed a strong performance in the opener here. And that’s exactly what she delivered as she romped to a straight-set win over Daria Saville.
In a match lasting an hour and 21 minutes, Anisimova ran away with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. She faced just one break-point and while she lost her serve off that, Anisimova managed to get the better of her opponent’s serve on four occasions.
Facing up to her will be Anna Bondar, who made it through to the second with a couple of wins in the qualifiers and then defeating Mayar Sherif in her opener here.
Bondar was a 7-5, 6-4 winner, following on from back to back straight-set wins earlier too. That would come as a relief to the 97th-ranked player given she had lost in the first round of the WTA 125 event in Canberra last week and runs the risk of falling out of the top 100.
Still, Anisimova shouldn’t have a lot of trouble getting past her.
Anisimova v Bondar prediction: Anisimova to win: 1/4
Sofia Kenin v Anna Blinkova Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between these two with both players clinching one apiece.
Sofia Kenin had made the second round at the Auckland Open last week and she has followed that up with another second round appearance here.
She would like to go further than that though but standing in her path is Russia’s Anna Blinkova who ended Bernarda Pera’s stay in the competition and in turn prevented an all-American match here.
The two won in contrasting styles.
Kenin was forced to come back from a set down to Lulu Sun while Blinkova did not have too many worries. Interestingly enough, Blinkova too is coming off a second appearance in the previous tournament she featured in – at Brisbane – making this a potentially exciting battle between two, under-performers from recent times.
While Kenin starts a bookmaker’s favourite, we think Blinkova could put up a fight.
Kenin v Blinkova prediction: Blinkova to win a set – Yes: 1/2
Veronika Kudermetova v Camila Osorio Preview
Head-to-Head: The only previous time that these two players have faced off in a competitive match was in Guadalajara last year and Osorio had edged past the woefully out of form Kudermetova in three sets.
Veronika Kudermetova would be heaving a sigh of relief. She has had some terrible form go her way and that has caused her ranking to drop from 19th at the end of the 2023 season to 72nd just one year later.
Another first round loss followed her last week and while she was a 3/5 favourite going up against Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her opener here, her lack of consistency would have been a cause for concern.
Which is why a 7-5, 6-0 win would have done her a world of good.
What needs to be seen is if it’s enough to help her avenge her defeat to Camila Osorio from the previous season. Osorio joins her Russian opponent in this second round after registering a straight-set win over the match favourite Yue Yuan in the first round.
Osorio was 11/10 coming into the encounter but played like she owned the court in her 6-2, 6-3 drubbing of her Chinese opponent.
Not much to choose between these two players and we could see a longish battle as a result.
Kudermetova v Osorio prediction: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
