Daniil Medvedev v Kasidit Samrej Preview
Head-to-Head: Medvedev and Samrej have never faced off before this.
Daniil Medvedev would be thankful to kick-start both, the Australian Open and his 2025 season campaign with a fairy straightforward opening encounter against a player ranked 418th in the world.
Thailand’s Kasidit Samrej earned himself a wildcard to feature in this tournament, making him one of the lowest-ranked players to take part in this year’s opening Grand Slam. He got that privilege by winning the Asia-Pacific Wildcard Playoff.
Other than that, Samrej has featured in just one match this season and that came in a Challenger tournament back home – he lost the opener in straight sets.
Medvedev has not featured in any matches this year so far and that’s a bit of a surprise. A three-time finalist at the Australian Open before this, you would expect him to know the courts like the back of his palm but at the time some amount of match practice would have made sense.
Not that it would have made too difference going up against Samrej but it could have held him a better stead for the latter rounds. Here though, the Russian should make it through in three.
Medvedev v Samrej prediction: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 2/7
Lorenzo Sonego v Stan Wawrinka Preview
Head-to-Head: Wawrinka had beaten Sonego in their only previous meeting which came in Umag in 2023 on clay.
Ranked 55th in the world, Lorenzo Sonego enters the Australian Open with a middling sort of a performance in the first two tournaments he’s played this year.
He reached the second round at both, beating Brandon Nakashima in Hong Kong and Gabriel Diallo in Auckland, but fell at that stage. Losses to Cameron Norrie and Alex Michelsen, players who are in and around his ranking mark just indicate the kind of form that Sonego is in.
One must quickly add here that Sonego has the ability to do well on all courts, having won four ATP titles across four different surfaces – clay, grass, indoor and outdoor hardcourt.
Up against him is Stan Wawrinka who has barely won anything in recent times.
The last tournament he won at this level was way back in 2017 before he added a Challenger title win in 2020. Since then there has been a barren run for Wawrinka.
Things looked to have gone from bad to worse last year when Wawrinka grabbed back to back wins in a tournament just once in the entire season and as a result of that, he has fallen to 156th in the world.
No surprises who the favourite here is.
Sonego v Wawrinka prediction: Sonego to win: 2/5
Marcos Giron v Yannick Hanfmann Preview
Head-to-Head: Giron and Hanfmann have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Featuring in Adelaide last week for what was his first tournament of the season, Marcos Giron kick-started his 2025 season with a couple of well-earned wins.
He overcame Aleksandar Vukic in a three-setter in his opener before putting Denis Shapovalov out of his misery in the second round in straight sets. It took the might of Felix Auger-Aliassime to end his campaign there.
Giron would be pleased with that showing given what had come in 2024.
In the 11 outdoor hardcourt competitions that Giron had featured in last year, he had won a mere six matches. At one stage, he was on a seven-match losing streak as well.
He now has a chance to win his first ever match at the Australian Open – in his sixth attempt too – when he takes on the 95th-ranked Yannick Hanfmann.
Hanfmann was forced to come through the qualifiers at both, the Brisbane International and Adelaide International in the lead-up to the Australian Open but was felled in his openers at those two competitions.
Known more for his performances on clay, Hanfmann has won just two of his 12 lower-level titles in hardcourt competitions and none since 2017.
Things could go pear-shaped very quickly for him here.
Giron v Hanfmann prediction: Giron to win AND Both players to win a set: 10/11
Borna Coric v Cristian Garin Preview
Head-to-Head: In their three previous meetings at the highest level, Coric leads Garin 2-1. These matches came in the 2019-20 period.
These are two, former top 20 players, searching for and trying to rediscover their glory days from the past.
Because Borna Coric has now slipped to 87th in the world at the moment while Garin is ranked 150th and needed to come through the qualifiers to make the opening round here.
The difference comes in the form of the surfaces in which they have excelled.
Coric’s best performance came on the hardcourt surfaces of Cincinnati Masters when he won the title. Garin, on the other hand, has five ATP titles under his belt and each of them has come on clay.
And that’s where Coric will hold the advantage over his opponent and should start a favourite.
Coric v Garin prediction: Coric to win: 4/6
