Sebastian Korda v Aleksandar Vukic Preview
Head-to-Head: After winning back to back matches on the Challenger circuit, Korda lost to Vukic in Toronto in 2023.
Lukas Klein was 11/5 odds coming into his opener against Sebastian Korda and when the American grabbed the first set 6-3, it looked to be going to plan.
Suddenly though, Korda lost his rhythm and lost the second set to love. Fortunately for him, he got his serving back on track and while Korda was unable to break him in the fourth, he clinched it in a tie-breaker to move into the second round.
This follows his third round appearance at this competition last year and quarterfinals in 2023.
What Korda will need is a better hold on his serving which saw him get just 60% of his first serves in and only 65% of those were won by him. Klein had better numbers than that.
Aleksandar Vukic will hope he is well-rested for his second round match following his five-setter in the opener. In a match filled with fluctuating fortunes, Vukic edged out Damir Dzumhur 6-7 (3), 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 with the two players remaining on court for three hours and 17 minutes.
If he can get his energies back, Vukic, backed by the boisterous home crowd could be a bit of a challenge for Korda after having defeated him earlier.
Korda v Vukic prediction: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 8/11
Casper Ruud v Jakub Mensik Preview
Head-to-Head: Ruud and Mensik have never faced off before this.
Casper Ruud has made clay court tennis his own, but he hasn’t quite been the same in hardcourt competitions. And that problem was on display when he took on Jaume Munar in the first round.
Now Munar is no pushover as has been on show this season but you would expect a world number six to have a better performance than a five-set win which lasted three hours and 24 minutes.
This was after Munar had come into the tournament following two successive wins at the United Cup, edging Tomas Machac and then overcoming Hubert Hurkacz.
He now takes on the 48th-ranked – also his career-best ranking – Jakub Mensik who has back to back quarterfinals under his belt this season. As recently as the previous week, Mensik beat Ben Shelton on his way to the last eight in Auckland.
Mensik was tested a little by Nikoloz Basilashvili but eventually came through in four sets.
He has a good chance to cause an upset here.
Paul v Nishikori prediction: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 11/20
