Frances Tiafoe v Fabian Marozsan Preview
Head-to-Head: Tiafoe and Marozsan have never faced off before this.
Things looked to be headed Frances Tiafoe’s way in his opener against Arthur Rinderknech when he took a two sets to love lead in his first round match.
Instead it took Tiafoe four hours and eight minutes in the end to force a 7-6 (2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-3 victory which also included him throwing up during the encounter.
According to Tiafoe the heat in Melbourne didn’t bother him as much as the over-hydration and that might have caused him his issues. He also said that had it been any other competition he might have thrown in the towel.
He now takes on Fabian Marozsan, another player who refused to give up in his opener against Thiago Seyboth Wild. In a first round match that went on for a whopping four hours as well, Marozsan was challenged by his opponent at multiple points in the encounter despite having gone into the encounter as a 2/5 favourite.
Marozsan lost his serve just two times in the match but his issue was his inability to finish things off – he frittered away 12 break-point chances.
In this second round battle between two players who are coming off four-hour matches, it would be the fitter one who comes through.
Tiafoe v Marozsan prediction: Tiafoe to win: 1/2
Corentin Moutet v Mitchell Krueger Preview
Head-to-Head: Moutet and Krueger have never faced off before this.
Corentin Moutet was playing the first match of the season, having last featured in Metz last year where he had made the semifinals.
More than two months later, he was drawn to face Alexei Popyrin in his first match back and was 13/4 going up against him. That changed drastically in favour of Popyrin when Moutet lost the first set and the writing seemed to be on the wall.
A couple of hours later, Moutet had turned the dial and completed a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win, in turn moving to the second round of this tournament for the fourth successive time he has taken part.
Moutet now takes on American qualifier Mitchell Krueger in the second round. Krueger also got the better of an Aussie player, taking out Rinky Hijikata in straight sets.
Much like Moutet, Krueger wasn’t quite the favourite going into his opener against Hijikata but came through 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to win his first ever main draw match at the Australian Open.
While Moutet is a 1/2 favourite here, we aren’t fully convinced about his chances in an outdoor hardcourt competition and the better option will be to go with the number of sets.
Moutet v Krueger prediction: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 4/7
