Daniil Medvedev v Learner Tien Preview
Head-to-Head: Medvedev and Tien have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Kasidit Samrej is a 418th-ranked player in the world and had earned himself a wildcard to feature in this tournament. That he was drawn to play Daniil Medvedev could have dampened any player’s spirits but not the 23-year-old’s.
In the end, Medvedev prevailed over Samrej but not before he was taken to five sets and three hours and eight minutes.
While a lot of credit is due to Samrej, it must be added that Medvedev’s lack of form would also be a bit of a concern.
Since making the final at this very tournament last year, Medvedev has done his bit in getting to the last eight and last four stages of hardcourt tournaments – and a final in Indian Wells – but hasn’t won a title since the 2023 Rome Masters.
He should not have a lot of issues in his second round match either, with his opponent Learner Tien being ranked outside the top 100 and in his maiden appearance at the Australian Open.
Tien was a whopping 3/20 favourite against Flavio Cobolli and came back from a set down to win it in five. A Next Gen Finals finalist from the 2024 season, Tien’s jump into the big leagues follows a season in which he won four Futures and three Challenger titles.
Still, you would expect Medvedev to come through without too much trouble.
Medvedev v Tien prediction: Medvedev to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/5
Hubert Hurkacz v Miomir Kecmanovic Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece. Miomir Kecmanovic had won in a qualifier in Rome in 2019 while Hurkacz grabbed a three-set victory in 2023 in Toronto.
Following on from his United Cup campaign in which Hubert Hurkacz had won just two of his five matches, he kick-started his 2025 Australian Open with a fairly regular victory.
Hurkacz overcame Tallon Griekspoor 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 to put some of his United Cup performances behind him having lost to Tomas Machac, Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz there.
He will now take on Miomir Kecmanovic saw the end of fellow Serbian Dusan Lajovic in a match that went to the fifth set.
Kecmanovic was a 1/5 favourite going into that encounter but Lajovic refused to fall apart in a hurry. In the end, it took him three hours and 31 minutes to clinch the win.
He was broken four times in the match but more vitally faced a total of 20 break-points with just 59% of his first serves finding their mark.
Hurkacz v Kecmanovic prediction: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 8/13
