Iga Swiatek v Rebecca Sramkova Preview

Head-to-Head: Swiatek and Sramkova have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Following her United Cup final defeat to Cori Gauff, Iga Swiatek would have liked to come back to court with a solid showing. And while she won her opener against Katerina Siniakova in straight sets, her serving did let her down on a couple of occasions.

Swiatek was broken twice in the match, both in response to Siniakova being a break down herself but the world number two then managed to get a second break of serve to grab the win.

What Swiatek would like is for a smoother run than that into the second week when things would start to get more and more challenging. It must be quickly added here that Swiatek hasn’t made the last eight stage at this tournament in each of the previous two editions.

She shouldn’t have a lot of problems against the world number 49 Rebecca Sramkova, who was is featuring in her first ever main draw at the Australian Open.

The 2024 Hua Hin winner Sramkova entered the tournament on the back of back to back first round losses at Brisbane and Hobart, which had put her at 1/1 underdog in this opener against Katie Volynets. Volynets went up to the extent of winning the first set but Sramkova came back to win in three.

Against Swiatek, things could get a lot tougher though.

Swiatek v Sramkova prediction: Under 18.5 games in the match: 1/2

Ons Jabeur v Camila Osorio Preview

Head-to-Head: Four previous meetings, including twice at the US Open, and twice last year at the French Open and Nottingham Open have all resulted in Jabeur beating Osorio.

Ons Jabeur had a tricky initiation to this year’s Australian Open as she took on Anhelina Kalinina in her first round match.

Kalinina had made it as far as the semifinals at the Brisbane International which would have given her a sniff in this opener but the class of Jabeur proved to be impenetrable.

In a match lasting just an hour and 12 minutes, Jabeur shrugged off a break of serve in the very first game in each of the two sets to win it 6-3, 6-3. And she will now face the Maria Sakkari-vanquisher Camila Osorio in round two.

Osorio was given a run for her money by Sakkari in a match that lasted two hours and 35 minutes before she bagged the win in the third set.

Jabeur’s record against Osorio seems to be enough to suggest that this could be headed just one – a fifth win for the Tunisian.

Jabeur v Osorio prediction: Jabeur to win: 2/5
