Elena Rybakina v Iva Jovic Preview
Head-to-Head: Rybakina and Jovic have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Elena Rybakina would like to get back to Wimbledon-winning ways and she did show a glimpse of what she is capable of last season when she grabbed three WTA titles – at Brisbane, Abu Dhabi and Stuttgart.
And she also helped Kazakhstan reach the United Cup semifinals with three singles wins before losing to Iga Swiatek in the last match.
Here at the Australian Open, Rybakina has begun in the manner she would have liked – with an absolute demolition job of Emerson Jones in her opener. She defeated Jones 6-1, 6-1 in a mere 54 minutes.
And now that she takes on the 191st-ranked Iva Jovic in the second round, we could be looking at a similar scoreline come Thursday.
Jovic had a wildcard for this competition and looked to have repaid that faith by winning her opener against Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the first round. Despite starting out an 11/10 underdog, the 17-year-old dropped a mere two games to complete her victory.
A juniors doubles champions at the Australian Open last year, Jovic will now hope she can put up a bigger fight than Rybakina’s opening opponent.
Rybakina v Jovic prediction: Over 16.5 games in the match: 1/2
Emma Raducanu v Amanda Anisimova Preview
Head-to-Head: Raducanu and Anisimova have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
While Emma Raducanu will be pleased with her 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) win over 26th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the opening round, it also brought with it a sea of questions around her serve.
15 times during the match, Raducanu was unable to get her second serve across, allowing her opponent 15 free points in the form of double-faults.
And while it did not cost Raducanu dearly in her opener, a tougher opponent would see to it that she got broken more than just the six times that she did. More pertinently, not every opponent would allow oneself to be broken six times in response too like Alexandrove did.
Amanda Anisimova did not have any such serving difficulties in her 6-2, 6-3 win over Maria Carle Lourdes.
Having entered the tournament on the back of a fitness trouble that had caused her to withdraw before the Hobart International quarterfinal, Anisimova was on court for a mere hour and 17 minutes.
While Anisimova was also broken twice, she won 63% of her first serves and 57% of her second serves to get a step closer to her last year’s performance here – a fourth round appearance.
We believe she can go past the former US Open champion here.
Raducanu v Anisimova prediction: Anisimova to win: 7/10
