Only as recently as July 2023 had Gregoire Barrere hit his career-best ranking of 49th in the world. Nearly 18 months from there on, the Frenchman has plummetted to 143rd on the ATP charts.
What that meant was that Barrere has been forced to play on the Challenger circuit, and yet, hasn’t won a tournament since the one at Quimper in 2023.
Two years on he played in that same competition in the week leading up to the Montpellier Open and lost to Ricardas Berankis in the second round.
Barrere did make the final of the Nonthaburi Challenger to kick-start the 2025 season but then fell in the first round of Australian Open qualifiers.
Koepfer Has Had His Own Issues
What’s interesting to note here is that much like his opponent in this encounter, Dominik Koepfer was also once ranked 49th on the ATP Rankings. And since then he has fallen to 124th in the world.
And while Koepfer did make it to the Australian Open main draw after winning three qualifying rounds, he did not do too well on either side of those victories.
Koepfer lost opening round matches at both the Challenger events he played in and now enters a competition which will be played on an indoor hardcourt surface.
It’s a surface on which Koepfer has generally struggled to get going and will have his task cut out.
