Li Hoping to Climb Back to Best
Ann Li’s career-best ranking of 44th came at the start of the 2022 season following a year and a half of some solid tennis. Since then, however, things haven’t quite gone her way with the American struggling to go deep into competitions.
It’s early days in 2025 but Li has shown the odd spark so far, especially at the Auckland Open and Hobart International.
At the first, Li defeated Sloane Stephens in the first round before going down to Katie Volynets and then made her way through the qualifiers at the second before sending Stephens out there too.
Li lost to Dayana Yastremska in a hard-fought second round match in Hobart before the eventual champion Madison Keys eased to a straight-set win in the first round of the Australian Open.
She now takes on a player who has struggled to get going this season.
Saville on a Losing Streak
Since making the second round at Wimbledon last year, Daria Saville has featured in five matches at the highest level and lost each one of them.
This includes a 0-3 record for 2025 when she lost in the qualifiers of the Brisbane International, and went down in the first round at both, Hobart and Australian Open.
Making matters worse for Saville is the fact that her losses have come to the 209th-ranked Anastasiia Sobolieva and Anna Blinkova, not quite top players by any stretch.
She will now move away from home, having played all these three tournaments in Australia, and it would be interesting to see if she can adjust quickly enough.
