Amanda Anisimova v Xiyu Wang Head to Head
Anisimova and Wang will be facing off for the first time in their careers.
Anisimova Hoping to Do Better Than Her Start
Following a first round exit at the Auckland Open – where she lost to fellow American Alycia Parks – Anisimova looked to have begun well in Hobart.
Anisimova sent the crowd-favourite Daria Saville out in her opener in straight sets before crushing Anna Bondar in the second round.
Unfortunately for the American, she picked up a cold before her quarterfinal against Elina Avanesyan and was forced to withdraw from the contest.
Still, Anisimova would have been quite confident heading into the season’s first major in Melbourne and that might have only increased when she took down Maria Lourdes Carle.
That joy was short-listed though with Anisimova going down to Emma Raducanu in the second round. She failed to take the fight to the third set there.
Wang Struggling to Show 2023 Form
Having won her maiden WTA title in 2023 when she lifted the Guangzhou Open, Xiyu Wang hit a career-high ranking of 49th in the world that very season.
The 2024 season should have been something she built on the previous year, taking her close to the top 25 or thereabouts.
Unfortunately for Wang, she struggled to get going. While she did make it to the final at the Austin Open, Wang won a mere 11 other matches on hardcourt surfaces spread across 17 tournaments.
And those woes seem to have continued into the new season as well with Wang losing in the first round at the Auckland Open and Hobart International and only managing to win a round at the Australian Open – against the 415th-ranked Julia Grabher – before falling in the second.
Can she turn things around here?
