She defeated Priscilla Hon in her opener, shocked top-10 player Emma Navarro in the second round before overcoming Anastasia Potapova to make it to the quarterfinals of the event.
It was Anhelina Kalinina who edged her out of the tournament – before thereby preventing a Birrell-Kudermetova semifinal meeting there.
Birrell also went through the qualifiers at the Australian Open and was then beaten in her opener by Eva Lys, a lucky loser who would go on to make the fourth round there.
