Having opted not to feature in any of the ATP tune-up competitions before the Australian Open, Tallon Griekspoor did not make much of a start to the season at the year’s first major.
The Dutchman was bundled out in the very first round by Hubert Hurkacz, losing in straight sets.
That had followed a solid end to the previous season in which Griekspoor had made the third round at the Shanghai Masters and the semifinals of the Stockholm Open – the latter at the expense of Casper Ruud among others in an indoor hardcourt competition.

Since making it to the second round at the Basel Indoors competition where he had knocked Alexander Bublik out after starting out as a qualifier, Botic van de Zandschulp hasn’t won another main draw match.
There were a couple of Davis Cup victories including one against Rafael Nadal but he was pushed out of Basel by Stefanos Tsitsipas, lost to Lorenzon Sonego at the Paris Masters and then lost two in two to kick-start this year.

Having once been ranked 22nd in the world, van de Zandschulp has fallen to 84th and unless he can turn things around by going deep into tournaments like this one in Montepellier, a bigger fall looks likely.
