Their only previous meeting came at the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup in which Lys had routed Martic.

It was an Australian Open story that could have well made a great fairy tale.
Eva Lys had lost her third qualifying round at the season’s opening Grand Slam and was on the verge of packing her suitcases and leaving Melbourne.
Just 10 minutes before getting the official green signal to leave, she was informed that Anna Kalinskaya had withdrawn from her opening round match and Lys would be given a go as a lucky loser.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Lys went on to defeat Kimberly Birrell, Varvara Gracheva and Jaqueline Cristian on her way to the biggest pay-cheque of her career as she made her way to the fourth round.
And while Lys was easily brushed aside by Iga Swiatek in that encounter, she would have savoured every moment of the competition.
The question now is whether the German can get back to her winning ways and proved that showing wasn’t a one-off, flash in the pan?
Martic Aiming to Break into the Top 100 Again
Petra Martic ended the 2022 season as a top-40 player and a year later she managed to retain that position – in fact moving two spots forward too.
Unfortunately for the Croat, things took a turn for the worse in 2024 as she went from one defeat to another. She suffered a five-match losing streak at one point during the season and towards the end of the year was forced to play in ITF competitions and the qualifiers of WTA events but things didn’t improve too much.
She began the new season this year with an opening loss in Canberra in an ITF tournament and then failed to qualify for the Australian Open before getting a nudge in as a lucky loser.
Unlike Lys, Martic lost in her opener in Melbourne – to Jaqueline Cristian who would go on to lose to Lys in the third round.
Here, Martic has managed to win both her qualifiers in straight sets, defeating Liel Marlies Rothensteiner and Zeynep Sonmez in straight sets to make the main draw.
At her current levels she could prove to be a tough match for Lys.

Lys will know that the adrenaline rush from the Australian Open result would be long gone and she will need to start afresh. The good news is she now knows that she belongs and while her experience is nowhere close to Martic’s, there’s a good chance she has the belief that she has the game to take on some of these peers.
