Aliaksandra Sasnovich had broken into the top 30 after a solid 2022 season but things have not been the same again after that.
Only a year later she had fallen to 90th in the world and by the end of the 2024 season, Sasnovich was 143rd with barely any wins under her belt at the highest level.
In fact, since making it to the fourth round at the 2022 French Open, Sasnovich has won a mere three main draw matches at the Grand Slam level and that has forced her to play more on the ITF circuit.
She made the second round at the ITF Canberra competition to kick-start the season but lost that match before falling in her first qualifier at the Australian Open.
Which is why Sasnovich would be relieved to have overcome Anna Bondar and Ella Seidel in the qualifiers here to grab a main draw spot.
Zakharova With a Similar Start
It’s quite an interesting coincidence that Anastasia Zakharova has had a very similar start to 2025.
She was knocked out in the first round of the Canberra ITF event, made the second qualifying round at the Australian Open before Sara Bejlek defeated her and was then forced to win both her qualifiers here to enter main draw.
In her second qualifying round, Zakharova defeated the 9/20 favourite Greet Minnen following her win over Mavie Osterreicher in the previous match.
The difference, however, is the fact that Zakharova has never been a top 100 player in the world and while she is just 23, that lack of experience could play against her against Sasnovich.
