Lulu Sun had broken into the top 300 by the end of the 2021 season and managed to remain there for the following two years.
It was in 2024 that Sun came into her own, as she won two ITF titles but more vitally made it to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon after having started off as a lucky loser. She shocked Qinwen Zheng in the opener and would go on to overcome Emma Raducanu in the fourth round.
Later a finals appearance at the Monterrey Open would help her to further garner ranking points and by the end of the season, despite suffering from a hip injury she had not only broken into the top 50 but was also named the WTA Newcomer of the Year.
Unfortunately for Sun, things haven’t gone her way since then with the Kiwi losing in the first round at all the tournaments she has featured in – in Auckland, Hobart and the Australian Open.

Sorribes Tormo Finally Makes the Main Draw
This is Sara Sorribes Tormo’s third tournament appearance this year and she has had to feature in the qualifiers at each one of them.
Sorribes Tormo was sent packing from the Brisbane International by Sara Bejlek, then lost to Maddison Inglis in the second qualifying round of the Australian Open before finally winning back to back qualifiers here to make the main draw.
Here in Linz, Sorribes Tormo eased past Tamara Korpatsch in her first qualifier before overturning the odds to defeat the 11/20 favourite Suzan Lamens in the second despite being bagelled in one of the sets.
With the kind of momentum she has, Sorribes Tormo will give herself a chance to win here but her overall record indoors isn’t the best.
