Maria Timofeeva v Ann Li Head to Head
Timofeeva and Li have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Timofeeva Surprise Winner of Opener
Maria Timofeeva had entered the qualifiers of this competition with her last main draw win at this level having come in July last year.
Since then, Timofeeva had barely done anything on note on court, even on the lower ITF circuit with two successive wins in just two such competitions.
This year had begun no better for Timofeeva after she lost in the first round of the Canberra ITF competition, second round in Bangalore in another one of the ITF tournaments and having failed to make the main draw at the Australian Open.
Here, she was knocked out in the second qualifying round, losing to Sijia Wei but then made it through as a lucky loser.
And starting out as a 21/10 underdog in her opener against Xiyu Wang, Timofeeva delivered the goods with a straight-set win.

Li Crushing Winner over Saville
Ann Li might have lost in the first round at the Australian Open but that defeat had come at the hands of the eventual champion Madison Keys. Before that, she had made the second round at both, the Auckland Open and Hobart International, defeating Sloane Stephens at both.
Here, Li started out a 1/2 favourite against Daria Saville and lived every bit of those favourite odds, as she pounded her way to a 6-3, 6-1 win in a mere 69 minutes.
Li was broken once in the match – in the very first game – but from that point onward she faced just one more break-point and saved it. In turn, she broke back immediately to level things out and then added four more breaks of serve.
Can she now win back to back matches for the first time this season, having last done that in Merida late last year on her way to the final?
Timofeeva v Li Prediction
While Timofeeva won her opener, it was more to do with her opponent’s struggles. Ann Li on the other hand, is on a bit of a roll and we can expect her to seal her place in the quarterfinals with a straightforward win.
Timofeeva v Li Tips
- Li to win: 1/2
- Li to win in straight sets: 7/5
