Hailey Baptiste v Kimberly Birrell Head to Head
Baptiste and Birrell have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Baptiste in a Comeback Opening Win
Following her quarterfinal appearance at the Auckland Open, Hailey Baptiste had walked into the Australian Open with a lot of confidence. That, however, last just one match as Baptiste fell in three sets to Laura Siegemund.
Coming into this competition in Singapore, Baptiste was a teeny-weeny favourite against Renata Zarazua, starting out at 9/11 to overcome her Mexican opponent.
Things looked to have begun poorly for Baptiste as she lost her serve twice to easily lose the first set. And in a strange turnaround, she broke Zarazua three times in a row after that to bagel her in the second.
Down a break in the decider, Baptiste then broke her opponent twice, saved two break-points in the process and then clinched a place in the second round off her first match-point.
Can she now continue in the same vein against Australia’s Kimberly Birrell?

Birrell Stuns Polina
Polina Kudermetova might not have had a great time at the Australian Open but she has already made it to the final of one competition this year. That had come in Brisbane where she even took a set off the world number one Aryna Sabalenka before folding up.
Which is why it was no surprise that Kimberly Birrell, herself a quarterfinalist at that Brisbane competition, was a 6/4 underdog in this opening encounter against Polina.
That she came through in two easy sets, 6-3, 6-2, is a testimony to the kind of turnaround that the Aussie has had in her career.
Birrell had entered this tournament at her career-best ranking of 95th and could come close to breaking into the top 80 if she manages to win this one.
Baptiste v Birrell Prediction
Baptiste is a bit of a favourite at 4/5 here but to be honest this could go either way with Birrell having had the kind of season where she could even go o to make the final of one of these tournaments.
Baptiste v Birrell Tips
- Birrell to win a set – Yes: 4/9
