Xinyu Wang v Elise Mertens Head to Head
They have faced off twice before this and both those matches came at the Indian Wells Open. In 2023, Wang won in straight sets while Mertens clinched their 2024 encounter in a similar fashion.
Wang Huffs & Puffs against Teichmann
Jil Teichmann is known for some of her best results at this level having come on clay and there was no surprise when bookmakers had installed Xinyu Wang as a 2/5 favourite to win their quarterfinal.
A little over an hour into the contest, Teichmann had claimed the first set in a tie-breaker, having not dropped her serve even once in that period.
And when Wang missed six set-points in the second set and it went into a tie-breaker again, it looked like not much was going her way. She managed to scoop the ensuring tie-breaker 7-5 before breaking Teichmann for the first time in the match in the first game of the third set.
That proved to be the only break of serve in the encounter and Wang ensured she served it out soon after to win it in a whopping three hours and 22 minutes.

Mertens Eases Past Osorio
Much like Xinyu Wang, Elise Mertens had also entered her match as a 2/5 favourite but unlike the Chinese player, she managed to play like a favourite too.
In a quarterfinal that went on for a mere hour and 24 minutes, Mertens was able to put it across Camila Osorio with much much ease. She broke Osorio four times in her 6-4, 6-2 win to romp into the semifinals.
This followed a final appearance at the Hobart International to kick-start the season for Mertens and a second round exit at the hands of Jessica Pegula at the Australian Open.
So far at the Singapore Open, Mertens conceded just one game to Taylor Townsend in her opener before getting taken into a third set by Tatjana Maria in the second.
Mertens v Wang Prediction
Mertens has the game and the experience to get the better of Wang who will need to recover quickly from her gruelling quarterfinal that lasted nearly three and a half hours. Backing the Belgian to win this one.
Mertens v Wang Tips
- Mertens to win: 8/13
