Yuan on a Three-Match Losing Streak
A former world number 36 and a title-winner at the 2024 Austin Open, Yue Yuan looked to have made a steady start to the season when she overcame Arantxa Rus in the first round of the Brisbane International and then shocked Marta Kostyuk in the second.
Her campaign at that tournament came to an end in the third round at the hands of Anhelina Kalinina but should would have been reasonably satisfied as far as season-openers go.
Unfortunately for Yuan, things haven’t gone her way in the following two competitions.
She was bundled out of the first round at both, the Hobart International where Camila Osorio knocked her out in straight sets and then the Australian Open where she failed to make it past Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Yuan now has the chance to pull one back as she takes on a qualifier who has never been ranked better than 786th in her career before.

Sonobe Played at the 2025 Australian Open Juniors!
On January 17, earlier this year, Wakana Sonobe turned 17. At around the same time she was about to kick-start her girls singles and doubles campaign at the Australian Open – she would go on to win the title at the former and finish a quarterfinalist at the latter.
A couple of weeks, she was playing in the qualifiers of the Abu Dhabi Open, just the second time ever in her career she was featuring at the WTA level. Sonobe had featured in these qualifiers last year too and lost her opening match.
This time around, however, Sonobe turned things around.
Starting out a 3/1 underdog against Hailey Baptiste, Sonobe dropped just four games in her opening qualifier win before dismissing Cristian Bucsa 6-3, 6-3 in the second.
She will now have a way tougher challenge but given how she has gone about her business, Sonobe will not be giving up without a fight.
