Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard v Aleksandar Kovacevic Head to Head
Mpetshi Perricard and Kovacevic have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Mpetshi Perricard at Career-Best Despite Shock Loss
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard is slowly becoming a player to watch and he continued with the good form that he had shown last year with a semifinal appearance at the Brisbane International to kick-start this season as well.
Having won a title on the clay court of Lyon and indoors in Basel, Mpetshi Perricard looked like he was on the verge of a third career title when Reilly Opelka ended his stay in the tournament.
Still he would have thought that the showing was enough to get him a deep run at the Australian Open which was his next stop.
Unfortunately for Mpetshi Perricard, he failed to get past a raging Gael Monfils in the very first round thereby continuing to struggle to get past opening Grand Slam matches – he has done it just once in his career.
He takes on another in-form player in the first round here.

Kovacevic Coming off Montpellier Final
It took Felix Auger-Aliassime three sets, of which two were tie-breakers, to break Aleksandar Kovacevic in the final of the Montpellier Open and win his second title of the season. It was an insight into the kind of form Kovacevic was in too.
The American, who has never been ranked better than 72nd in the world, had entered that tournament with a Challenger title under his belt at Oeiras.
Still, Kovacevic was forced to go through the qualifiers to make it to the Montpellier main draw and he did that by overcoming Pablo Carreno Busta in one of those rounds.
In the main draw, Kovacevic defeated the likes of David Goffin, Alexander Bublik and then Andrey Rublev to make it to the final.
He has had a couple of days off now and will need to resume playing at a similar level when he takes to court for this opener.
Mpetshi Perricard v Kovacevic Prediction
We think that while Kovacevic will start off strongly, it needs to be seen if he has the gas left in the tank to continue in the same vein as the match progresses given the amount of tennis he has played over the 10 days before this tournament. Mpetshi Perricard should win it in the end.
