Denis Shapovalov v Tomas Machac Head to Head
Shapovalov and Machac have never faced off before this.
Shapovalov in a Stunning Win over Fritz
It was a day of upsets in Dallas but the biggest one came at the hands of Denis Shapovalov who sent the top seeded Taylor Fritz packing in the second round.
Shapovalov did not have it easy but once it was certain he was prepared to battle, the Canadian found ways to remain in the contest despite losing his serve on two occasions as compared to breaking Fritz just once.
Two hours and five minutes later, Shapovalov had bombarded Fritz with 15 aces, winning 75% of his first serve points and edged him out 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2).
This followed Shapovalov’s first round victory over over Miomir Kecmanovic which also came in three sets.
This also meant that Shapovalov had won back to back matches for the first time since winning the Belgrade Open title late last year.

Machac Wards off Hijikata
After having eased to a straight-set win over Kei Nishikori in the first round, Tomas Machac made it two in two when he coasted to another one of those in the second round too.
Machac, who has risen to a career-best ranking of 25th in the world, overpowered Rinky Hijikata and claimed his spot in the last eight with a 6-4, 7-6 (0) win.
This was Machac’s seventh victory of the season having earlier ended the United Cup with a 2-2 record, reached the third round at the Australian Open and then beaten Soon-woo Kwon in his Davis Cup match late last week.
He has a tough challenge coming up next but having done solidly in indoor hardcourt competitions in his career at every level, Machac should be well-prepared for this.
Shapovalov v Machac Prediction
While Shapovalov has looked in the competition, Machac’s performances have reeked of consistency and it has taken the likes of Casper Ruud, Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz to beat him this year – all top-10 players. Backing Machac to continue with that run.
Shapovalov v Machac Tips
- Machac to win: 1/2
