Dusan Lajovic v Roberto Carballes Baena Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between them, both of which came in the qualifiers of clay court tournaments. Carballes Baena won in Casablanca in 2014 while Lajovic levelled things out in Madrid in 2022.
Dusan Lajovic has had a struggling start to the season and he would have been looking forward to the change in surface with some anticipation. He did make the second round at the Brisbane International but even that was after losing in the qualifiers and entering as a lucky loser.
And post that Lajovic lost to Jakub Mensik there, fell to Adam Walton in the qualifiers in Adelaide and was defeated by fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic in the Australian Open opener.
He now takes on Roberto Carballes Baena who has had a much better start to the season.
Once known for his clay court specialty, Carballes Baena has become better in hardcourt competitions and twice this year won successive matches in a tournament. First in Auckland, Carballes Baena overcame Daniel Altmaier and Francisco Cerundolo to make the quarterfinals.
And he then made the third round at the Australian Open too.
This is clay though and while both prefer playing on it, not only does Carballes Baena have a better record on it, he has also good recent form and rhythm.
Lajovic v Carballes Baena prediction: Carballes Baena to win: 1/2
Alexandre Muller v Laslo Djere Preview
Head-to-Head: Muller and Djere have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Alexandre Muller has been a bit of a surprise package of the season and the reason for that isn’t just because he won a title.
It’s also due to the fact that the title came in a hardcourt competition in Hong Kong and at the expense of Arthur Fils, Jaume Munar and Kei Nishikori among others.
To give a context, Muller has won 10 lower level competitions on the Challenger and Futures tour and eight of them have come on clay. So for him to clinch his maiden ATP title outside of clay does makes things interesting.
He faces a qualifier here in the form of Laslo Djere who defeated Marco Trungelliti and Federico Coria to make the main draw – and indicator that he’s got his clay game mojo back on well.
Earlier this year, however, Djere has barely won a thing – a qualifying round at the Australian Open and a couple of matches at the Quimper Challenger.
Things could become interesting on clay though.
Muller v Djere prediction: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
Facundo Diaz Acosta v Thiago Seyboth Wild Preview
Head-to-Head: They have faced off thrice on the Challenger circuit and one other time in the qualifiers of a tournament at the highest level and it’s 2-2 at the moment. All three Challenger matches have come on clay and Seyboth Wild leads 2-1 on it.
Much like most other players featuring in this competition, Facundo Diaz Acosta has also excelled on clay all his life. And that has translated into a whopping 10 titles for Diaz Acosta – nine at the lower levels and one, here in 2024. He is the defending champion, yes!
Five of Diaz Acosta’s Challenger title wins came in 2023 and it was that season that propelled him to people’s noticing eyes while a title victory here last year helped him break into the top 50.
Up against him is the firebrand Thiago Seyboth Wild who loves his time on clay too and even more interestingly, loves getting a bit worked up during matches at times – probably as means to motivate himself.
Seyboth Wild hasn’t had the best of starts to the seasons having lost all the three matches he’s played but then again, those weren’t on clay. The last of those came in the Davis Cup against Arthur Fils in which he was involved in a bit of a row with his opponent too.
We could end up with an exciting one here.
Diaz Acosta v Seyboth Wild prediction: Three sets in the match: 6/5
Mariano Navone v Francisco Comesana Preview
Head-to-Head: This is a rather interesting rivalry with the two having faced off 10 times in their careers already. All of these matches have come at the lower levels – Challengers and Futures – and on clay with their last match having come in 2023. Comesana leads 6-4. Interestingly, Comesana had won their first six, Navone has now won four in a row.
Both players enter this match with similar form in the season-opening hardcourt competitions and without anything to show for their clay court exploits when they took to court at this tournament last year.
While Navone had featured in the first round here last season, Comesana had failed to make it through the qualifiers even.
This isn’t to say that they don’t do well on clay with Navone having made the final of the Rio Open last year after starting out as a qualifier. He would then finish runner-up at Bucharest as well before winning a Challenger title on the surface.
On the other hand, Comesana is currently ranked 87th, close to his all-time best of 85th and grabbed three Challenger titles last year – two of which came on clay. At the highest level, however, he hasn’t had the best of records and it would be interesting to see how he goes here having lost four in a row to Navone.
Navone v Comesana prediction: Navone to win: 11/20
