Brandon Nakashima v James Trotter Preview
Head-to-Head: Their only previous meeting came on the Challenger circuit with Nakashima winning that hardcourt encounter in Pau last year.
Brandon Nakashima has made a very forgettable start to the season. In the four hardcourt competitions that he has featured in, the American has won just one match and that came in Adelaide against Yannick Hanfmann.
What makes matter worse for Nakashima is he cannot even blame the luck of his draw for his four defeats.
He has already lost to Lorenzo Sonego in Hong Kong, Rinky Hijikata in Adelaide and Yoshihito Nishioka at the Dallas Open last week with only the loss to Ben Shelton being an expected one.
The world number 43 now faces Japan’s James Trotter, who might be ranked 182nd in the world, but is at his career-best ranking.
Trotter made the main draw with wins over Ryan Seggerman and Taro Daniel and is now aiming for his win at this level. Given how Nakashima has played all season, it wouldn’t come as a huge surprise if that comes to fruition here.
Nakashima v Trotter prediction: Three sets in the match: 5/4
Miomir Kecmanovic v Borna Gojo Preview
Head-to-Head: World number 55 Kecmanovic and the 411th-ranked Gojo will be facing off for the first time.
Miomir Kecmanovic might have lost in the first round in Dallas last week but that loss was not just a fighting one but it also came at the hands of the eventual champion Denis Shapovalov – one of the things that happen.
The good news for Kecmanovic is that he has had a couple of solid showings already this year.
After a second round exit in Hong Kong, the Serb made it all the way to the semifinals in Adelaide and then defeated Hubert Hurkacz on his path to the Australian Open third round.
He will start off a huge favourite, as a result, against a player who not played a lot of tennis in recent times – including in 2024. Borna Gojo, once ranked 72nd in the world, has fallen to outside the top 400 and that has resulted in a few struggles.
This year, for instance, he has participated in only two tournaments – Brisbane International and Australian Open – and was knocked out in the qualifiers of both. And things could even tougher as he enters this tournament on a protected ranking but faces the in-form Kecmanovic.
Kecmanovic v Gojo prediction: Kecmanovic to win in straight sets: 5/6
Alexander Shevchenko v Michael Mmoh Preview
Head-to-Head: Shevchenko and Mmoh have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
It’s been a strange kind of season for Alexander Shevchenko who has won three matches in 2025 and all of them have come in team events.
Shevchenko grabbed a couple of victories at the United Cup which included pulling one over Stefanos Tsitsipas before he helped his country to a win against Pakistan’s Muzammil Murtuza in the Davis Cup.
And he has lost four matches, including first rounds at the Australian Open and the Dallas Open.
Michael Mmoh is steadily trying to make a return to top level tennis following his elbow-related issues that have kept him out of action. One can be sure that there would have been thoughts of retirement that might have come to him as well.
As things go though, Mmoh has tried well this season and only last week won a round in Dallas having made it through to the main draw as a qualifier. And here in Delray Beach, he has entered the main draw with wins over Dmitry Popko and Radu Albot.
Can he now push Shevchenko out in another opener?
Shevchenko v Mmoh prediction: Shevchenko to win in straight sets: 5/6
Ethan Quinn v Tristan Boyer Preview
Head-to-Head: Quinn and Boyer have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
In a match between two players who have never been in the top 100 in their careers, Ethan Quinn enters as a 199th-ranked player while Tristan Boyer has nudged towards his career-best of 114th in the world.
Needless to say, Boyer is showing better form having earlier also featured in the Australian Open qualifiers, made it to the main draw and then overcome Federico Coria in the first round. He later lost to Alex de Minaur.
While he lost to Michael Mmoh in the Dallas qualifiers last week, Boyer has now come through thanks to an injury to JJ Wolf and a win over Murphy Cassone in the qualifiers here.
Quinn, on the other hand, is a lucky loser after having fallen to Zachary Svajda in the second qualifier.
Last week he had defeated Zachary’s younger brother Trevor in the first round of the Dallas Open as well while earlier in the year, he was a finalist at the Canberra Challenger having made it through the qualifiers.
Expecting a gritty battle for an elusive place in the second round here.
Quinn v Boyer prediction: Three sets in the match: 6/5
