Jelena Ostapenko v Moyuka Uchijima Head to Head
Ostapenko and Uchijima have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Ostapenko Finally Turns Things Around in Doha
Jelena Ostapenko had had a horrible start to the season as she fell from one defeat to another over her first four tournaments. In fact, a scrappy victory over Magdalena Frech in Adelaide was her only one over those four competitions which ended in four defeats to go with that.
Suddenly, however, Ostapenko turned things around in Doha.
It started with a fairly straightforward victory over Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito but things progressively got tougher as far as her opponent quality is concerned. And Ostapenko got better and better.
She first got past Liudmilla Samsonova, then crushed the world number four Jasmine Paolini before swatting Ons Jabeur aside. But then came her crowning moment as Ostapenko routed Iga Swiatek in straight sets, beating her for the fifth time in a row in her career to reach the final.
The final proved to be a damp squib for her as Ostapenko fell to Amanda Anisimova but she had enough to bring her back into the reckoning for the rest of the season.

Uchijima Comes Through the Qualifiers
A hard-fought, three-set win in the first round of the Australian Open against Magda Linette was a big result for Moyuka Uchijima but other than that she has done nothing of note.
She had earlier been knocked out of Brisbane in the first round and lost in the opening qualifier of Adelaide International while Olivia Gadecki got the better of her in the opening round of the Singapore Open.
This was followed by her attempts to make it to the main draw at all the WTA tournaments in the Middle East swing – came through as a lucky loser in Abu Dhabi, won both her rounds in Doha last week and repeated that in Dubai this time.
At the first two, Uchijima was knocked out of the tournament in the first round itself – losing to Leylah Fernandez and Yulia Putintseva. And she now faces the might of Ostapenko here.
Ostapenko v Uchijima Prediction
Ostapenko is a 1/4 favourite but there are two mitigating factors here. Uchijima isn’t short of a fight as has been on display even against players of the calibre of Fernandez and Putintseva so one can expect that from her. The other factor here is Ostapenko was playing in the final in Doha till Saturday and she plays again on Monday in another country. Can expect a dip in intensity from her at some stage.
