Zheng Hoping to Do Better
Qinwen Zheng had opted out of the United Cup to focus on her preparations for the Australian Open but she has barely done anything of note.
At the Australian Open, Zheng managed a first round win before losing to Laura Siegemund in the second round – probably the biggest shock of the tournament with her opponent having entered the match as an 11/1 underdog.
She turned her attention to the Qatar Open last week and after getting an opening round bye, Zheng fell in straight sets to Ons Jabeur in the second.
What’s interesting to note here is that Zheng had suffered a mysterious ailment at the end of the previous season that she said last month hadn’t completely resolved – without naming the exact cause. It remains to be seen if she has fully recovered from her fitness-related problems here.

Stearns Stuns Jabeur
Ons Jabeur had come into this tournament on the back of some excellent form but Peyton Stearns ensured she stalled her progress.
Having won just three first round matches – and none thereafter – this season, Stearns was a distant second favourite in this opening round encounter but she found a way to win.
In a match that went on for two hours, Stearns found herself down a break on two occasions in the first set but came back both times to push it into a tie-breaker. She won the tie-breaker and then broke Jabeur once in the second to go on to grab the victory.
Stearns will now have a good chance to make it back to back main draw wins for the first time this season given the kind of struggles her opponent has seen this year.
