While a 5-3 record for the season so far might not sound too bad for most players, Jasmine Paolini isn’t quite your definition of most players. At least not at the moment when she is ranked fourth in the world.
Which is why a third round exit at the hands of Elina Svitolina and another early ouster at the Qatar Open to Jelena Ostapenko might not have pleased Paolini too much.
However, this one in Dubai will be her most important tournament thus far for the season. That’s to do with the number of points that Paolini is defending after having surprisingly won the title here last year.
Having gone into this tournament last year ranked 26th in the world, Paolini’s victory here had propelled her to 14th and a final at the French Open and Wimbledon later in the year would help her break into the top five.
With a lot of those points still to defend too, Paolini has her work cut out and needs a solid opening showing here.

Lys in a Tough Win over Begu
Eva Lys might have lost in the first round of the Linz Open but she had clearly not forgotten what is it like to win a big main draw match after having experienced that at the Australian Open earlier this year.
Having made that tournament as a lucky loser, she had gone to win three rounds in a row before it took the might of Iga Swiatek to end her fairy-tale campaign.
Lys won a couple of rounds here too, against Ann Li and Kamilla Rakhimova and was a 1/2 favourite against Irina Begu in her opener.
Begu put up a brave front despite that, winning the first set after Lys missed a chance to serve it out at 5-3 and the having missed a couple of set-points at 5-4.
The comeback in the second set was an excellent one from Lys, who despite losing her break advantage twice, kept at it before turning on the screws with a break in the 12th game.
In the decider, a late break saw Lys complete a three-set victory.
