Gauff Shocked Early in Doha
When Cori Gauff kick-started her season with a title at the United Cup that saw her win five successive matches and then had the American make the quarterfinals at the Australian Open for the loss of just one set, it looked like she had started off in the kind of fashion she needed to.
Nine wins in a row had taken her to the last eight stage where she met Paula Badosa.
Unfortunately for Gauff, she was shocked by Badosa in that match and while the odd loss is always on the cards, that it came at a stage where she looked like one of the favourites would have hurt.
And it was followed by another opening defeat, this one to Marta Kostyuk in Doha last week.
Gauff will now look to turn things around quickly in Dubai as she looks to emulate her best showing of a semifinal appearance back in 2023.

Kessler Shocks Anisimova
While Amanda Anisimova was always expected to struggle after having featured in her sixth match in seven days just two days before her opener here, one thought she would put up a bigger fight.
However, running on reserves, Anisimova failed to get going and McCartney Kessler took full toll of her opponent’s struggles and sealed off a straightforward win in the first round one.
Kessler needed a mere 68 minutes to send the WTA Qatar Open winner packing with a 6-2, 6-3 win. She raced off to two breaks of serves without any return in the opening set and then broke two more times in the second set to serve for the match at 5-2.
While Anisimova finally broke back, she was unable to hold again, allowing Kessler an easy passage to this meeting with Gauff.
This follows a title win for Kessler earlier this year in Hobart.
