Tauson Goes Past Sramkova
Clara Tauson was put to the sword in the first set of her opener by Rebecca Sramkova but came back strongly to win it in straight sets and make the second round.
Having lost her opener in Doha last week to Elise Mertens, Tauson might have had visions of another early exit when she failed to break Sramkova in the entirety of the opening set and then fell 6-3 behind in the tie-breaker.
She saved all three set-points, faced and saved a fourth at 7-6 before winning it 9-7!
A thoroughly distraught Sramkova just fell apart after that as the Auckland Open winner Tauson broke her service three times to bagel her in the third set and improve to 11-3 for the season.

Svitolina in a Crushing Win over Kalinskaya
Anna Kalinskaya’s fitness issues have become more pronounced this season and Elina Svitolina took full advantage of that from the last year’s runner-up here.
Svitolina needed a mere 67 minutes to destroy Kalinskaya’s chances as she won 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the second round.
While Svitolina also dropped her serve twice in the match – once in each set – she broke Kalinskaya in all but one of her service games in the encounter.
The world number 24 had earlier kick-started the season with a quarterfinal berth at the Australian Open before falling to Madison Keys. Since then she fell to Anna Blinkova in her Linz opener and then lost to Jessica Pegula in the second round in Doha.
