Sabalenka Sends Kudermetova Packing
Aryna Sabalenka was shocked in her opener at Doha last week by Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova. She wasn’t going to allow another Russian to spoil her Dubai party in her opener here.
In a match that still went on an hour and 50 minutes, Sabalenka lost her serve twice but did enough to clinch her third round berth with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
The world number one lost her serve once in both the sets but that wasn’t enough for Veronika Kudermetova to convert that into something substantial.
Sabalenka did win 71% of the first serve points on show but where she might get tested towards the business end of the competition is her second serves – the Belarusian lost 18 of those 31.

Tauson Involved in a Thriller with Svitolina
Clara Tauson had a difficult first set in her opener against Rebecca Sramkova before she had found a way to bagel her in the second.
Something similar repeated for Tauson in her second round match too when she was pushed to the limits in an opening set tie-breaker by Elina Svitolina.
Only this time, Svitolina stormed back to grab the second and it took Tauson a tie-breaker in the third as well to finally edge past her Ukrainian opponent. The match lasted two hours and 43 minutes.
Tauson would be pleased with the way she came back from being 2-4 down in the first set but she would want to do a lot better than the 20 break-points she conceded in the entire match.
