Paolini Wastes No Time on Lys
There were no fairy tale endings for Eva Lys this time as Jasmine Paolini coasted to a straight-set win over her German opponent to move into the third round.
Lys, who had reached the fourth round at the Australian Open earlier this year despite starting out as a lucky loser, did not match up to Paolini’s all-round game in the second round here.
After coming through with a first round bye, Paolini broke Lys three times in a row in the first set to show she was in command.
She then grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second set before Lys came back with back to back breaks of serves but Paolini broke back to level things out at 4-4.
Things went on serve till 6-5 when Paolini needed two match-points on her opponent’s serve to complete the win.
This was after Paolini had fallen in the third round at Doha last week. She will hope to do at least one better this time having entered the tournament as the defending champion.

Kenin Surprise for Kostyuk
Despite being a 6/4 underdog going into her second round match against the in-form Marta Kostyuk, Sofia Kenin pulled off a stunning display of fighting tennis to win it in three.
Kenin came back from a set down and then needing to save two match-points in the second set to win the contest in nearly three hours of a topsy-turvy battle.
She came through 5-7, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) to enter the third round of this tournament for the second time in her career. Kenin had last done in 2019 following which she had featured here four times and lost in the first round every time.
The American now has a 7-5 win-loss record for the season as she continues to exert her grit in her matches including when she had defeated Donna Vekic in the first round.
Her big test comes in this match against a world number four, a player who had won this very tournament last season.

If this is the manner in which Kenin can continue putting a defensive show, we can expect more of the same from her and that could force Paolini to dig deep too. Another three-setter in the offing by the looks of things.
