Jack Draper v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head
They have played twice before this – one on the Challenger circuit in 2019 and the second was a match at the Indian Wells Masters in 2024. O’Connell won it on both the occasions.
Draper Sends Popyrin Out
Featuring in his first match since retiring from his fourth round match at the Australian Open, Jack Draper found a way to carve out a straight-set win over Australia’s Alexei Popyrin.
Draper was kept on court for an hour and 24 minutes but he managed to clinch a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Popyrin to seal a second round berth next to another Aussie.
With eight aces and a whopping 72% of the total points won on serve, Draper was never in trouble while serving. He broke his opponent twice in the first set and while he did not get a way past his serve in the second, there was an easy tie-breaker that followed and won him the encounter.
He will now have a good chance to double his win count in this tournament where he is making his debut.

O’Connell Edges Out Habib
Having come into the tournament on the back of a couple of wins in the qualifiers, Christopher O’Connell was pushed to the limits by the wildcard entrant Hady Habib in his opener.
The Aussie was on court for nearly two hours in which he was taken to two tie-breakers and was forced to save a set-point and fritter away four of his own in the opening set itself.
In the second, O’Connell failed to break his 166th-ranked opponent but then found a way to clinch the tie-breaker that followed to find himself in the second round.
This follows a first round exit at both, the Brisbane International and the Australian Open for O’Connell with his only previous win for the season having come in Adelaide where he had defeated the out-of-sorts Arthur Rinderknech – also in two tough sets.
Draper v O’Connell Prediction
Draper should not have a lot of trouble against a player who has been finding life on courts rather difficult this season. Expecting Draper to not make heavy weather of this.
