Sebastian Baez v Mariano Navone Head to Head
Their only previous match came at the 2024 edition of the Rio Open. They had faced off in the final and Baez had dropped just three games on his way to winning the title.
Baez Eases Past Burruchaga
Having made the second round at the Argentina Open last week before falling to Thiago Seyboth Wild, Sebastian Baez won another opener in Rio when he defeated Roman Andres Burruchaga.
In a match that went on for over an hour and a half, Baez clinched a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Burruchaga to seal his second round berth again.
The match began with both players losing their serve twice over the first four games but from that point onward, Baez found a way to get better on his serve.
Baez broke his opponent one more time in the first set and then again in the second set when the score read 5-5. He then served it out to seal just his second main draw win at this level for 2025 following his opening ousters in Auckland and Australian Open in January.

Navone Continues Clay Form with Carballes Baena Ouster
While Roberto Carballes Baena is still not in full rhythm on clay this season, he is no mug with the racquet and in more recent times he has also become a much improved tennis player.
Which is why Mariano Navone’s 6-4, 6-3 drubbing of Carballes Baena would not just be a big relief for him but also an indicator that his quarterfinal appearance at the Argentina Open last week was no fluke.
There he had defeated Francisco Comesana and Holger Rune in the first two rounds before going down to Joao Fonseca.
Here, Navone was on the court for an hour and 36 minutes and while he was broken once apiece in both the sets, that was only after he had gotten the better of his Spanish opponent’s serve on two occasions.
Can he now carry this same form on to round two?
Baez v Navone Prediction
While Baez starts an 11/20 favourite we cannot discount Navone and his form here. We expect him to carry his momentum forward and while we would be averse to calling a winner here, we think it could get darn close.
Baez v Navone Tips
- Navone to win a set – Yes: 4/6
