Sorana Cirstea v Karolina Muchova Head to Head
Five previous meetings between these two players have led to four wins for Muchova.
Interestingly, four of these five matches came in 2023 when Muchova won in Dubai, Montreal and US Open while Cirstea’s sole victory came that year in Miami.
Muchova Edges Past Kessler
It took Karolina Muchova two hours and 28 minutes to come through her third round match with the Czech player needing a final set tie-breaker to defeat McCartney Kessler.
Muchova came through 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5) against her American opponent in a match that was filled with service gaffes that led to nine breaks of serves in all.
Both traded breaks to get to 4-3 when Muchova got the better of Kessler’s serve again. In the second set, however, Kessler proved too strong for the Czech, breaking her twice to take it to the decider.
The duo traded early breaks in the third set before Kessler broke again and had three break-points to go 5-2 up. Muchova showed what she is capable of, holding on to that serve before getting past McCartney as she looked to serve for the match at 5-4.
While she missed three match-points at 6-5 on her opponent’s serve, Muchova finished things off in a close tie-breaker that followed.

Cirstea in a Gruelling Win over Navarro
Having already shocked Daria Kasatkina in the first round here and with a victory over Alycia Parks in the second, Sorana Cirstea had already done more in this one tournament than she had in the rest of the season.
Come the third round against the ninth-ranked Emma Navarro, Cirstea was a 2/1 underdog and not surprisingly so.
She did not play like one at all though, fighting tooth and nail till the very end before winning in three. In a match that went on for over three hours, Cirstea claimed a spot in the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5 win.
It was a topsy-turvy encounter that saw a whopping 31 break-point opportunities for both players, of which Cirstea was broken eight times. And while she got the better of her opponent’s serve on seven occasions, her first set triumph in a tie-breaker clinched it for her.
Interestingly enough, despite Cirstea’s poor form that has seen her plummet to 89th in the world, she is coming off a semifinal appearance at this tournament last year. Can she now emulate that showing?
Cirstea v Muchova Prediction
Cirstea has found a way to win against higher-ranked – and currently, higher rated – players in the world but we could well see Muchova finally end her campaign with a relatively straightforward win.
Cirstea v Muchova Tips
- Muchova to win in straight sets: 8/11
